New Moon was expected to be a box office success and it delivered in a huge way. The film made over $140 million in the U.S. during its opening weekend. It was the third all-time biggest opening weekend ever. Only The Dark Knight and Spider-Man 3 opened bigger. You can see the chart of all-time openings here. The international box office for New Moon was also enormous. New Moon's worldwide take was 258.8 million. Twilight fans clearly did not care that many critics disliked the second film in the series. Deadline Hollywood Daily has some photos here that show the Twi-Hard fan frenzy as fans waited to see the movie.
It's been a great year at the box office for Sandra Bullock. The Blind Side starring Sandra Bullock and Tim McGraw had a strong opening. It made over $34 million. Sandra Bullock's romantic comedy, The Proposal, was also a box office success this summer. 2012 made another $26.5 million to move it past the $100 million mark. Planet 51, an animated alien adventure comedy starring Dwayne Johnson, opened in fourth place with a box office take of $12.6 million. Jim Carrey's A Christmas Carol continues to do well. It finished fifth and made another $12.25 million. Precious came in sixth and made another $11 million.
