The top three spots in this weekend's box office were exactly the same movies as last weekend's. Avatar was number one for the fourth consecutive week. It was followed by Sherlock Holmes and Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel. Avatar had another huge weekend and made another $50 million. It does look like Avatar now has a decent shot of catching and passing Titanic on the all-time worldwide box office chart.
This past weekend's new films could not defeat the Christmas movies. Daybreakers, a science fiction vampire thriller starring Ethan Hawke, debuted in fourth place and made $15 million. Amy Adams romantic comedy Leap Year opened in sixth and made $9.2 million. Michael Cera's Youth in Revolt opened in ninth and made $7 million. You can see the weekend's full box office chart here.
