Courtney Love Shows Up Drunk for New York Times Interview
Eric Wilson has an amazing article at The New York Times in which he interviews Courtney Love. Courtney told Eric that she is well aware of how disturbed people think she is, and that she wants to be "trusted" again. Alas, she showed up drunk and without clothes to the interview. For real.
On Tuesday night Courtney showed up (by her own admission) drunk at the Mercer Hotel for their appointment. She met Eric in the lobby but told him to wait in her hotel room where she's been living, while she gave an impromptu concert for passersby. Now really, who in their right mind allows a trained journalist from The New York Times to wander around in their hotel room unsupervised? That's like inviting Bob Woodard into the White House and hoping that he won't write about any of the things he sees or hears (oh, wait, several presidents have already made that mistake).
But back to the Mercer Hotel. Eric noted racks of designer clothing, piles of jewelry from Hollister, wilting bouquets of flowers, chocolates from Vosges and all sorts of other interesting things. He even noted down the titles of all the books she was reading.
Finally, Courtney showed up -- totally naked.
Shortly after 8 p.m., Ms. Love burst into the room with the Marchesa dress slung on one arm and the noted German Neo-Expressionist artist Anselm Kiefer on the other. She was entirely naked and leaning on Mr. Kiefer for support. She made one lap around the room, walking in front of a photographer, an assistant, a hairstylist and me. She pulled over her head a transparent lace dress that covered up nothing, and demanded my assistance -- "Not you," she said to Mr. Kiefer, who was bent over trying to help her -- to stuff her feet into a pair of black Givenchy heels that were zipped up the back and tied with delicate laces in the front. Then she applied a slash of red lipstick in the vicinity of her mouth.
"I really must get out of here," Mr. Kiefer said.
It just gets weirder from there. Courtney had lots of fascinating things to say (the interview went on for hours apparently) and she apologized the next day for her behavior. She said she's not normally like that. It's a must read.
