Gunman Opens Fire in Tucson, Shoots Congresswoman, Federal Judge, Onlookers
This morning in Tucson, Arizona, a gunman opened fire on a crowd in front of a Safeway store. The crowd was gathered to talk to U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords, who recently won reelection to her seat in Congress. The suspect is in custody and is said to be a young white male in his twenties. He shot Representative Giffords, then opened fire on the crowd. A federal judge was shot, along with a number of Giffords' staff members and people in the crowd. No motive has yet been determined for the shooting, although some believe it is politically motivated and are blaming Sarah Palin for putting Representative Giffords' name on a map with crosshairs drawn on it. But there is no evidence whatsoever as to the gunman's motives at this time.
Dr. Peter Rhee of University Medical Center in Tucson, Ariz., provides an update on the condition of U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords. The congresswoman was rushed to the hospital Saturday after being shot in the head.
The surgeon who is the head of the
trauma unit said they received
ten patients, one has died,
five are in critical condition and
five are in surgery now.
He said Representative Giffords
came through the surgery and that
he was optimistic about her recovery,
because she could follow commands.
He said she was shot once in the temple
and it went through and through. He said
he is as optimistic as he can be in
these circumstances.
The one death was a young child. Take a look:
