Wig Sales Soared Over Christmas Holiday in Britain
The Guardianreports that wig sales were up at upscale British department stores Harrods and Selfridges. Sylist Jo Walters told the Guardian that sales were probably up because hair extensions are wrecking people's hair.
"Hair extensions have wrecked a lot of my clients' hair," said stylist Jo Walters, 28. "And colour take a lot of maintaining. The wig is a great alternative."
Black women, especially in America, have been wearing wigs for some time. Halle Berry, Beyonce and Kelly Rowland use them and Oprah Winfrey owns dozens. Now British clubbers and the fashion pack are picking up on the trend. Designer Marc Jacobs wore one for a recent photoshoot and Pixie Geldof has been photographed frequently in hers.
The fact that there are some nice looking wigs available now could be another reason sales are up. The most expensive and best wigs for stylists to work with are made from human hair. The less expensive wigs are acrylic. We saw some air stylists do some great things with wigs made from human hair on an episode (gallery here) of Jacklyn Smith's Shear Genius show last year. We sure hope Shear Genius returns again this year.
