Avatar Makes $1 Billion Worldwide in 17 Days

Avatar Floating Rocks

Avatar has made over $1 billion at movie theatres worldwide in just 17 days. The film is already fourth on the All-Time Worldwide Box Office Chart - see here. It should easily get to second place with its only remaining competition being director James Cameron's other monster hit, Titanic. Avatar was also the number one film in the U.S. again this weekend. It made another $68 million.

Sherlock Holmes and Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel each had strong second weekend box office numbers. Sherlock Holmes made $38.3 million and finished second. Alvin's Squeakquel came in third and made $36.6 million. It's Complicated finished fourth and made $18.7 million. The Blind Side, starring Sandra Bullock, made another $12.6 million during its seventh week in theaters pushing its box office total over the $200 million mark. It's no wonder Sandra Bullock was voted the top money making star of 2009 with both this hit and The Proposal in 2009.
