Perth Mint Unveils World's Largest Gold Coin

Perth Mint Worlds Largest Gold Coin

The Perth Mint in Australia has unveiled the world's largest gold coin. The gold coin weighs 1 tonne, about 2,205 pounds. It is 99.99% pure gold and has a diameter of nearly 80 centimeters (about 32 inches). The coin, which features a kangaroo design, is called the Australian Kangaroo One Tonne Coin. It is valued at around $57 million.

Ed Harbuz, The Perth Mint CEO, says a team of artists and technical staff spent months working on the enormous coin. He says, "To cast and handcraft a coin of this size and weight was an incredible challenge, one which few other mints would not even consider."
