Paranormal Activity Beats Saw VI to Win Weekend Box Office
Saw VI was no match for the low-budget horror film Paranormal Activity. Paranormal Activity, which lacks the blood and gore of Saw VI, made $22 million beating Saw VI, which opened in second place with just $14 million. Maybe now the horror franchise known for torture can finally end.
Spike Jonze's Where the Wild Things Are is already starting to fade. It finished third and made another $14 million. Law Abiding Citizen was fourth and made $12.7 million. Couples Retreat, the lone comedy in the top ten, made another $11 million in its third week to bring its total to $78 million.
Three other films opening this weekend did not fare well. Astro Boy opened in 6th place and made just $7 million. Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant was unable to benefit from all the interest in vampires thse days. It opened in eighth place and made $6.3 million. Amelia, starring Hilary Swank, opened in 11th place and made just $4 million - it was showing in under 1,000 theatres.
