Flatshare: A Stackable Fridge You Can Share With Roomates
Stefan Buchberger, from the University of Applied Arts, Vienna, Austria, won the Electrolux Design Lab 2008 competition with his unique refridgerator concept called Flatshare. Flatshare is a modular fridge with individual compartments for people who live with several roommates. It would be useful in dorms, offices and apartments where multiple people may be using the same refridgerator.
Flatshare consists of one base station and up to four stackable modules. The modules allow each individual user to have his or her own refrigerator space and can be customized with various colorful skins as well as with add-ons like a bottle opener. The sides of the stackable modules have handles which make them easy to to transport.
"I got the idea to create the Flatshare fridge because in many shared flats there is a problem with the refrigerator," says Buchberger. "It gets filthy because no one person feels responsible for cleaning it."
"A fridge is a tricky thing to reinvent," says Henrik Otto, head of Global Design for Electrolux and chair for the jury. "Flatshare, however, manages to be new in a fun and expressive way. A shared refrigerator is also very relevant from a consumer-insight perspective, managing to resolve the needs and wants of the target group."
Because this is a protype it may be a while before you can buy something like Flatshare. A video of Flatshare is below. You can see more winning concepts from Design Lab 2008 here.
