Mainland Chinese Head to Hong Kong to Shop till They Drop During Golden Week
It's Golden Week in China. The week long holiday
celebrates National Day in China. For many mainland Chinese, that means it's time to shop. Naturally, they head to Hong Kong. More than half a million visitors will hit the luxury stores in Hong Kong, such as Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Gucci this year. So far there have been record crowds and long lines.
There are no luxury or sales taxes in Hong Kong, so prices are around 30% cheaper than in mainland China. The stores are so crowded, they have to limit
the number of people who can get in at a time. The WSJ's Cathy Yan reports on what has become a national week of shopping:
