Athens, Greece Shuts Down as Massive Strikes and Protests Sweep City
Athens, Greece is prety much
shut down today due to massive
protests over austerity measures
put into effect as a condition
for an IMF bailout of the the
country, which has major
economic woes. The bailout is
supposed to keep Greece from
defaulting on its massive debt.
The austerity measures are
not likely to be rolled back:
the government is out of money,
and the EU and the IMF want spending
reduced. Civil workers are on strike, which has caused a major shutdown.
