Baauer's "Harlem Shake" has topped Billboard's Hot 100
. The popularity of the song has been fueled by a funny dance craze involving the song. Harry Rodrigues (Baauer) has been posting some of the videos in a Tumblr blog linked from his website, baauer.com
The New York Times reports
that Bauuer's hit comes just as Billboard is tweaking the formula for determining what makes a hit song. The new formula now includes YouTube data. Several recent hits have become popular because of YouTube, particularly "Gangnam Style" and "Call Me Maybe."
editorial director Bill Werde told the New York Times
, "The notion that a song has to sell in order to be a hit feels a little two or three years ago to me. The music business today - much to its credit - has started to learn that there are lots of different ways a song can be a hit, and lots of different ways that the business can benefit from it being a hit."
Billboard says "Harlem Shake" would still have made the top 15 on the Hot 100 even without its new formula for determining a hit song.
