Apple announced the iPhone 5c today at a press event. It is the lower priced iPhone that has long been anticipated from Apple. Apple had been competing with cheaper smartphones from competitors by discounting its older models, but the rapid pace of technological developments and growing number of competitors made it necessary for Apple to introduce a lower-priced model. It was a smart move by Apple.
The iPhone 5c has a plastic body, unlike the iPhone 5s which has an anodized aluminum body. The 5c's hard-coated polycarbonate body has a steel reinforced frame. The iPhone 5c a 4-inch Retina display, 8 megapixel iSight camera and FaceTime HD camera. The smartphone is powered by Apple's A6 chip. The device is powered by iOS 7, the new iPhone operating system.
Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, said in a statement, "iPhone 5c is everything iPhone 5 was and more, in an all-new design packed with great features. iPhone 5c is designed with a beautiful polycarbonate enclosure that looks and feels so solid in your hand."
The 5c comes in five different colors. It will cost $99 for the 16GB model and $199 for the 32GB model. It will be available pre-order starting September 13 and available for purchase starting September 20.
