Posted on March 18, 2015

Brilliant documentary filmmaker Albert Maysles (Grey Gardens, In Transit) died on March 6th at the age of 88. One of his last films, Iris, will be released on April 29th. The film is a documentary about 94 year-old designer and fashion icon Iris Apfel.

Iris and her husband founded a luxury fabric design business that was called upon to renovate the White House under a number of different administrations. Iris is a world traveling free spirit who has become a fashion icon. Her wit, her verve and her way with clothing and accessories is unmatched.

Immediately recognizable by her giant, round glasses and her colorful collection of vintage costume jewelry, Iris has always gone her own way. The Met did an exhibit based on her style. And now she has her own successful costume jewelry line on HSN called Rara Avis. The film follows Iris and captures her thoughts on style, fashion and remaining true to one's own self.

Albert Maysles made more than 50 documentaries, including the first Beatles film What's Happening and Gimme Shelter. He was the recipient of numerous awards, including two Peabody Awards, three Emmys and six Lifetime Achievement Awards. He was presented with the National Medal of Arts from President Barack Obama in 2014. Maysles was a genius who knew how to get the best out of his subjects. We feel sure he captured the essence of Iris Apfel and her individuality and can't wait to see the film.
