ABC News is
reporting that 40 states now allow retailers to charge a credit card surcharge of up to 4%. The states not allowing the surcharges include: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Kansas, Maine, Massachusetts, New York, Oklahoma and Texas.
Some retailers, including Walmart, have announced that they will not pass along a surcharge to customers. Walmart told
ABC News, "We are not interested in surcharging customers in order to allow credit card companies to continue charging unfair fees."
ABC News says smaller retailers are likely to be among the first to use the surcharge. It is also small retailers that get the hit the hardest by the fees charged by the credit card companies. Consumers are not going to like this. Take a look:
