365 by Whole Foods Market Stores to Launch in 2016

Posted on June 20, 2015

Whole Foods is planning to launch a new store line in 2016. The new store line will be called 365 by Whole Foods Market. Whole Foods says the 365 stores will offer low prices on natural and organic products.

The new store division will be headed by Jeff Turnas, a Whole Foods veteran. Turnas says in a statement, "We are excited to introduce 365 by Whole Foods Market to bring healthy foods to even more communities with a fresh, quality-meets-value shopping experience that's fun and convenient. A modern, streamlined design with innovative technology and a carefully curated product mix will offer an efficient and rewarding way to grocery shop."

If Whole Foods can deliver on organic foods at lower prices with the new stores than they stand a good chance of strongly competing with local Trader Joe's and Walmart stores. A Fool.com story notes that Whole Foods is sometimes called "Whole Paycheck" because of high prices. It says Trader Joe's stores bring twice the sales per square foot than Whole Foods stores. The Fool story also notes that organic and natural foods have gone mainstream. All grocery stores now typically have organic food and specialty food sections. Grocery retailers can not win on item exclusivity alone. Once an item becomes popular or in demand you can now be sure a nearby grocery store will probably soon start carrying it.

Chain Store Age says Whole Foods will open five to ten 365 stores next year. Turnas talks about the new store concept in this short video shot outside of the Whole Foods corporate headquarters in Austin, Texas. He says the new stores will enable the company to bring "fresh, healthy food to communities that we've not been able to - or wouldn't be able to - with a Whole Foods store." Take a look:
