Some Earrings For the New Year
As the New Year approaches, it certainly can't hurt to don a new pair of earrings for the festivities. We love these andalusite earrings with chain dangles from jewelry designer Georgia Hadley. The earrings feature faceted andalusite briolettes (say that three times, really fast) that dangle from gold chains attached to French earwires. In 14 Karat Gold, the earrings retail on the designer's website for $158.00. But if you're on an earring budget, you can buy the same design for much less in goldfilled or sterling silver, which is a very nice option.
Georgia Hadley is having a fabulous sale right now: this is a great place to find some beautiful and elegant earrings that would work for either day or evening. All designs are available at Adorneya.com.

A New Black Handbag
About this time of year, we're looking for a new black day handbag. We like this one from the Cole Haan Woven Tote Collection. It's made of hadwoven Italian leather, and features short shoulder straps with a 6" drop. The dimensions are 13 1/2"W x 8"H x 5"D, and the fittings are brass covered in nickel, so they should last quite awhile. This one retails for $595.00 at ColeHaan.com.

Mac Launches Lingerie Collection
Hanukkah is still going strong, but those who celebrated Christmas on the 25th seem a bit pooped from all the shopping, cooking, partying and gift-giving. In fact, the patrons at our local Starbucks this morning looked quite zombie-like. Thank goodness someone is launching something this week. Mac Cosmetics has launched its spring 2006 makeup collection, which they -- confusingly enough -- call "Lingerie." It's not lingerie, though, it's makeup.
Laced with frost, shiny as satin - the naked "undertones," naughty violets, trousseau whites and skimpy pinks of this playfully provocative new colour collection are designed for your inner femme. This Lingerie is meant to be seen! Flaunt it!
Pictured are Mineralize Skinfinish in Petticoat, a powder blush and highlighter ($23.50), Lipstick in Body Suit ($14.00) and Lip Glass, a high-gloss lip gloss, in Fine China ($14.00).
The colors are quite pretty. In fact, they'd look great on New Year's Eve, especially if you're wearing silver or black.

Holiday Spending Up 8.7% this Holiday Season
According to The Wall Street Journal, holiday spending was up 8.7% this year from last year.
Holiday spending climbed 8.7% ahead of last year, according to SpendingPulse, a retail-sales data service from MasterCard International's MasterCard Advisors unit. Demand for flat-panel television sets, MP3 players and digital cameras helped spur gains, as did sales of home furnishings. But sales of jewelry fell this season following years of solid gains.
The strongest category gains came in home furnishings, including linens and picture frames, with sales up 15%, according to the SpendingPulse data. Sales of consumer electronics grew 11%, fueled in part by prices for flat-screen TVs and digital cameras that were lower than last year. Sales of sporting goods, books, music and video advanced 6.4%, while apparel rose 5.8%, despite the lack of must-have items this year. Women's apparel did a little better, with an 8.2% gain. Furniture sales rose 5.3%. Sales of jewelry slid 4.6%, perhaps as shoppers funneled their big-ticket spending into electronics.
Online spending continued to explode this year, as retailers offered Web-only discounts and shipped gifts later than ever. Holiday retail sales on the Internet are expected to top predictions of $19.6 billion in sales this year, a figure that is 24% ahead of the $15.8 billion consumers spent online last holiday season, according to comScore Networks Inc., a Reston, Va., market-research firm.
Hmmm...spending on jewelry was down this year. But spending on gift cards was off the charts, and those figures aren't counted until they are spent, usually by the end of January. Overall, it looks like it was a decent holiday season for retailers. But now all anyone is looking out for is good bargains -- and a way to spend those gift cards, of course. We'll be spending ours this week...we do love those gift cards, we must admit.

Trading Gift Cards Online
The Internet seems to offer an option for everything. What if you receive a gift card to a store you don't plan on shopping at or that you don't particularly like? NBC 6 News reports that several websites allow you to trade gift cards.
If you got a gift card to a store that you'd never shop in, and you can't return it to the merchant, how about selling it or swapping it for another?
..................
Numerous websites allow you to buy, sell, or swap gift cards with someone else. You'll have to register with the site, and there's usually a small transaction fee.
NBC 6 says some websites offering buying, selling and swapping of gift cards include cardavenue.com, certificateswap.com, swapagift.com, cardbuyback.com, giftcardsagain.com and ebay.com.

Twentysomethings Embrace Antiaging Products
The Washington Post reports that twentysomethings are now obsessing about keeping their youthful looks and are buying antiaging products.
"Now younger women are looking at these boomer women and saying 'Wow, it's not so bad growing older,'" says Denise Fedewa, a senior vice president at Chicago-based ad agency Leo Burnett who recently completed a study on women older than 45. "Maybe they're as much the trendsetters as younger women."
It's a phenomenon not just in this country but in much of the Western world, says Mair Underwood, an Australian researcher who's examined attitudes about aging among boomers and others in her country.
Still, while she applauds people who want to take better care of themselves, she worries that an obsession with fending off age will cause young people, in particular, to struggle with the inevitable changes in their bodies later in life.
"Will we end up with a whole generation of individuals with low self-esteem?" asks Underwood, who's based at the University of Queensland in Brisbane.
Amy Flink, a 24-year-old Chicagoan, agrees that societal expectations can go overboard. She recently went for a free department store facial, only to have the clerk berate her about her freckles and the beginnings of tiny lines under her eyes.
That kind of harsh response, she says, "adds an extra level of paranoia and self-doubt _ and how many people in their 20s need that?"
Amy needs to stay out of the sun -- the only reason she'd have wrinkles at 24 is too much sun exposure. But that clerk is never going to sell any products by insulting her clients. The article notes that Amy later bought some eye cream -- from another store.

Tax Breaks for Hybrid Cars
The Wall Street Journal reports that if you've been thinking of buying a hybrid car, January would be a great time to do that because of new tax incentives.
The new tax credits replace a $2,000 tax deduction on hybrids that's been available in recent years. Credits are usually far more lucrative than deductions, because credits reduce your tax bill dollar for dollar, while deductions reduce your taxable income. For someone in the top 35% tax bracket, the old $2,000 deduction produced a $700 tax savings.
The Internal Revenue Service has yet to release final guidance on the credits, but energy-conservation advocacy groups estimate the credits will range from $250 to $3,400, based on fuel economy and vehicle weight.
To see a list of the estimated tax credits on current and expected hybrid car models, check out www.aceee.org/transportation/hybtaxcred.htm. Of 21 hybrids listed, 14 have estimated credits in excess of $1,000. Three probably won't be eligible for credits. (At least one state, Colorado, has a state tax credit, too.)
The article recommends buying the extended warranty on the car's battery if you're planning on keeping it for 100,000 miles. Apparently, the batteries in the hybrids are pretty reliable, so that's nice.

The Joy of Kiehls
Do you remember that study that proved that women who smell like grapefruit are perceived as being 10 years younger than they really are? (no, we're not joking -- it was a real study). Well, here's a wonderful collection of products for anyone who's feeling a bit exhausted around the holidays: the Kiehl's Grapefruit Collection. The set includes Grapefruit Liquid Body Cleanser; Grapefruit Non-Soap Cleansing Bar; Grapefruit Hand and Body Lotion, Lip Balm #1 in a tube; Intensive Treatment for Dry and Callused Areas (deluxe); and coconut-infused Amino Acid Shampoo. It retails for $44.00 at Kiehl's.com, and if you register online, they give you a code for free shipping. We feel 10 years younger already.

Last Minute Gifts
Well, it's now December 22nd, so if you haven't ordered your gifts online yet, you're going to have to pay for overnight shipping. Or, you could always resort to the old-fashioned way of shopping: head to the mall. At this time of the week it's time for the procrastinators to start thinking about gift cards. An Amazon.com gift card can even be sent via email at the very last minute, if you're trying to set the world record for last minute gift buying.
Just about every major retailer is featuring gift cards this year: from Neiman Marcus to Kohl's. Our favorite gift cards for stocking stuffers are from Starbucks and from Blockbuster. Starbucks gift cards are so useful, and who doesn't like to rent movies? They're also inexpensive and easy to get. In fact, we're heading out today to pick up a few for some special recipients.

Gifts For the Stressed Out
It must be all the rushing around for the holidays we've been doing: this Peaceful Present gift set from Origins sounds like the perfect gift for anyone who's a bit stressed out these days. The set includes:
Peace of Mind On-the-spot relief 0.5 fl. oz./15 ml
Peace of Mind Tension-releasing vapor bath 3.4 fl. oz./100 ml
Peace of Mind Vegetable wax candle 4"
We love the Peace of Mind On-the-spot relief stuff: it's this little bottle of some kind of peppermint concoction. We dab it on our temples and the back of the neck and it really works -- for minor stressors at least. If you get hit with a major disaster at work you might need something stronger than aromatherapy to get you through the day -- say a full 3-hour shopping session. But if that's out of the question, try the Peace of Mind -- it really helps.
This nifty gift set is only $35.00. Origins.com is offering a free upgrade to 2nd Day Air shipping if you order by December 21st at 3:00 pm ET, using code 12052.

TechTether: New Hot Cell Phone Accessory
The Seattle Times explains the origin of a hot new cell phone accessory called the TechTether. The TechTether is a beaded strand that clips your cell phone (or other gadget) to your handbag or purse.
So simple and intuitive, that TechTether -- the brainchild of two Medina women -- is to be featured on "The Today Show" this morning as a hot holiday gift. The devices, with clasps on each end, come in 35 styles and retail from between $20 and $100.
After losing two cell phones, once while on a ride at Disneyland, Mary Bennett thought that surely someone else had already made such a device and hoped to buy one. But when she searched for such a product online, she found nothing.
"I couldn't believe it. Even to this day, I'm still waiting for, 'Hey, did you see this" similar product?
So the stay-at-home Medina mother of four went to a store and bought two strings of freshwater pearls, which she tied together, then duct-taped them to her phone and purse.
The Seattle Times says the TechTether comes in a variety of styles including crystals, alabaster, corl, pearls and other chain links.
They can be found at Nordstrom, Dillards, Frenchy's Day Spa and Sony Style Stores. The $20 glass beads version of the TechTether can be found here on Nordstrom.com in black, multi, amber and copper.

These Shoes Are Made For Walking
Before a recent trip to Europe, we spent an inordinate amount of time trying to find the right shoes. The day shoes had to be casual, comfortable and cute. We didn't want giant, oversized white running shoes which scream "Tourist" so loud in Europe that every pickpocket is immediately notified by pager of your arrival, so we did some serious research.
One of the most popular types of shoes the savvy traveler wears looks to us like a bowling shoe. In fact, at first we thought there might be some giant bowling convention going on in Rome we hadn't heard about. And the bowling type shoe can be comfortable: one of our traveling companions swears by Joseph Siebel's shoes. But we wanted something a bit hipper, a bit more mod if you will. And we found what we were looking for with these two different styles of Clark's Privo shoes.
The one on the left is called the Privo Women's Zombie Shoe (of all things), but we just adore it. They are perfect for those horrible long plane rides and for schlepping through the airports. They slip on and off so easily and have this squishy inner sole that is just heaven. We heard that this style gives some people a slight blister on the heel the first time they wear it so we carefully applied a bandaid before heading out for a walk. But no problems, for us at least.
Don't let the name fool you. These sporty, bright slip ons are anything but zombie-like. We bought the black, but they also come in pink and pale blue. For spring, they're doing white which we will be buying no question.
These retail for $79.95.
The second pair of Privos we took on the trip was also wonderful. They are suede slip-ons with a zipper and breathing holes for your feet. They also have that rubber insole that is just so amazing. We walked all over ancient ruins in these with no problems at all. They have a really nice non-slip sole so you don't disgrace yourself by landing on your posterior if you misjudge one of the endless marble steps we seemed to encounter. These retail for $89.95 and are called the Privo Fireball Shoe. (Clearly the marketing guys at Clarks have quite the odd sense of humor.) Both styles are available at Soleas.com, which is offering 2nd day air delivery for $5.99 and free regular shipping. If you enter "Privo" in the searchbox, they come right up. We already have our size in every color or we wouldn't share -- that's how selfish we are.

Chain Belts For the Holidays
The White and Black stores carry only clothes that are either black or white, which is an interesting concept. We like these two belts from the online store, which would make great holiday gifts. On the left is a really pretty chain-style belt made with glass pearls and crystals, with a flower at the catch. It comes in one size, measuring 48" total with an adjustable hook closure. It retails for $68.00.
For a more casual look, we also like this Beaded Medallion Belt, which measures 44" total. The metal chain belt has glass and acrylic stones, and an adjustable lobster clasp, and would look great with jeans or a knit skirt.
It retails for $48.00. And if you need any holiday dresses that are either black or white, they also have a good selection of those.

RoomBuds for Your Roomba
These cute Roomba covers from MyRoomBud can quickly transform your Roomba from a robot into a cute furry creature that cleans your floor. The costumes available include Zeb the zebra, Roor the tiger, Mooba the cow and Spotty the leopard. More designs are also planned. According to the MyRoomBud faq the costumes won't interfere with the Roomba functionality or remote control. If you aren't familiar with the Roomba, it is a floor cleaning robot. More information can be found at iRobot, the manufacturer of Roomba, and on Amazon.com. Roomba sales have passed the 1.5 million mark so there may be a growing market for Roomba accessories like the RoomBuds. (Via

Luxury Gifts For Him: Elegant or Fun Cufflinks
We just love a man who has great taste in cufflinks: they're also a great conversation starter for the man who is somewhat shy. We like these 18-karat yellow gold, sterling silver and citrine cufflinks from Konstantino Treasures. Handmade in Greece, they retail for $535.00.
But what if they guy you're buying for is younger, with a hipper vibe? In that case, we think his New Year's tux will be spiffed up enormously by these
Paul Smith retro cufflinks. They're colorful in yellow with red, blue, and green beach umbrellas; they are also signed by the designer. Made of ceramic and silver metal, these retail for $125.
Both sets of cufflinks are available at NeimanMarcus.com, which has a nice selection online.

An Ordinary Mouse Just Won't Do
You don't have to settle for an ordinary mouse anymore. There are numerous mice on the marketplace. There are creative mice that come in different designs and styles. There are also wireless mice free of the cords that
often get caught or tangled. Most mice are priced below $100 making them cool and affordable gifts.
Logitech makes some optical and laser wireless mice like the Logitech MX1000 laser cordless mouse featured in the
picture on the right. Razer makes mice specifically for gamers. The sleek Razer RZ-1600 USB Diamondback gaming mouse is a
mouse designed for performance and accuracy. Apple recently debuted the Mighty Mouse which has force-sensing
side buttons and a special Scroll Ball that lets you move around inside a webpage without moving the mouse. More about the Mighty Mouse can be found on Apple's website
and on
Amazon.com. These mice can all be found in most electronics stores.
Amazon.com carries Logitech, Razer, Apple as well as several other
brands in its
mice section.
There are also mice with unusual designs. There are mice that look
like cars.
There are also novelty mice like the mouse with Homer
Simpson inside and cute mice like the Hello Kitty mouse and Logitech's Tiger Mouse. The Pat Says Now
mouse shop carries a lot of interesting mouse designs including chilli, cow, pirate, duck, doggy
and kitty mouse styles. The kitty mouse is in the picture on the right.

Luxury Gifts For Him: The Hermes Tie
A tie is not a boring gift if it's a silk twill, hand-folded Hermes tie. We like this classic red silk tie patterned with horse-bits.
If the guy in question prefers a bit more whimsy in his ties, Hermes provides for him as well: it has giraffe ties, cat ties, fish ties, bunny ties and airplanes against a cloudy blue sky. We particularly like this tie in a power red with a pattern of giraffes. The ties retail for $145 at Hermes.com.

Luxury Holiday Gifts: American Girl Dolls
Maybe this holiday season is the time to introduce your favorite little girl to the American Girl collection. The dolls each have their own stories, books, and outfits. We like the Elizabeth Doll & Hardcover Book set, which retails for $92. Elizabeth is dressed in a coral pink taffeta gown with a white shift underneath, stockings, and shoes. She's 18" tall and has a soft body and pasable arms and legs. She even has pierced ears (clearly, she was ahead of her time).
We also like this new $20 set of Elizabeth’s Accessories, which includes
a pinner cap trimmed with grosgrain ribbon and lace, a faux pearl choker, a fan which opens and closes and drop earrings. Of course, you should be warned. Once you get a little girl hooked on the whole American Girl thing, you're in for years of buying expensive dresses, accessories and friends for her dolls who each have books of their own. Still, playing dolls is a great way to boost creativity and imagination, and it's a nice alternative to videogames.

Luxury Gifts For Him: Bull and Bear Cufflinks
There's still plenty of time to zip on over to Tiffany.com or to your local Tiffany's to pick up a fabulous gift for the man who loves his french cuff shirts: cufflinks. We really love these "Bull and Bear" cufflinks for the guy who either plays the market or who always has his nose buried in the latest issue of Barron's or The Wall Street Journal.
These are made of 18k yellow gold: on one cuff he has a bull for when the market is rising and on the other cuff he has a bear for when selling short is the smart move. They're subtle, but believe us when any other stock market aficionado gets a look at them, they'll be green with envy. They retail for $1,200.00.

Holiday Shipping Deadlines Approaching
When can you last order an item online and get it there
in time for Christmas and the first day of Hanukkah?
Part of the answer to that question depends on how
much you are willing to pay.
There are just a few days left before online retailers
will start charging you extra for shipping. For many
retailers this coming Monday (Dec. 19th) is the last day
you can ship an item at regular shipping prices. By Tuesday (Dec. 20th) retailers start charging an extra fee for shipping if you want to get it there by Christmas. December 21st is the very last day to order an item at many
online retailers and still get it there by December 25th. Amazon has a
shipping option called Guaranteed Accelerated Delivery that can get items ordered on the 22nd there in time for Christmas providing they are eligible.
Keep in mind that every retailer is different and you will want to check the retailer's shipping information page to find out their specific mailing deadlines and fees. We've provided some quick links to the shipping information pages of some
retailers below.

Buy.com
Walmart.com

Automated Bidding Service Called Snip Grows in Popularity
Piotr Tomczyk started Snip as a hobby when he was frustrated by constantly being outbid in bidding wars on Allegro, a popular European auction site.
Tomczyk's business has been challenged in other ways. In April 2002, he made the Snip program eBay-compatible. Soon after, eBay Germany prohibited the use of automated programs on its auction site, at one point suing a company that sold automated bidding software. A settlement was eventually reached and eBay revoked the ban. eBay has since acknowledged the existence of automated bid programs, but refers to them as "outbid" services in its help section.
Tomczyk has now set his sights on the U.S. market. "We currently have about 30,000 Snip users in the U.S.," Tomczyk said. "The potential for Snip in the U.S. is huge because of the popularity of eBay in that market. It dwarfs the online auctions of Europe."
The growth of Snip from a hobby to a worldwide enterprise has consumed much of Tomczyk's life. Last September, after seven years of study, he achieved his Bachelor's degree. He is now pursuing a Master's degree in Computer Science.
Snip claims to have 125,000 users worldwide with over 280,000 automated bids per month. 30,000 of Snip's customers are in the U.S. Snip has competition here in the U.S. including Auction Sniper, SnipeSwipe and EZsniper. eBay also has its own built-in automated bidding system. eBay definies sniping as "placing a bid in the closing minutes or seconds of an auction."

Fancy Gifts for Pampered Pets
MSNBC.com has a great article by Sandy Robins which mentions several gift ideas for your pampered pet including cell phones, jewelry, fancy pet dishes, toys and vacations. Here are some of the most interesting products we found in the article.
The PetsCell from Pets Mobility is a new gadget that allows owners to track their pets using a cell phone. Pet owners can call the device with their cell phone and the PetsCell will answer. The PetsCell is not cheap. The phone costs $300 and there is also a $15 a month calling plan which will begin in March, 2006 according to MSNBC. One cool feature on the phone is if someone finds your lost pet they can just press the button on the PetsCell and it automatically dials your cell phone.
In jewelry, the article mentions puppy jewelry from Fifiany & Co. and Oscar Newman. And in fancy pet dining the article recommends Jo Sherwood Designs and the Rare Earth Company. Jo Sherwood's dishes are not your ordinary pet serving bowls -- fancy pets will be most pleased.
Also mentioned in the MSNBC.com article was the pet-friendly Cypress Inn in Carmel -- a great location if you want to take your pet on a getaway. The city of Carmel sounds pet-friendly too according to the Cypress Inn website:
Carmel is a pet friendly town where dogs can run free on Carmel Beach. Several Carmel restaurants welcome your pet for lunch and dinner and some provide your pet with a water bowl and biscuits. Some restaurants even feature a special menu for your dog!
And in charitable gifts, Sandy Robins recommends sponsoring an animal at Best Friends Animal Society, which has been providing hurricane relief and helping stranded pets from Hurricane Katrina. Robins says people making a donation also receive "a color photograph and information about your pet and a certificate of appreciation."

Coke Introduces Coca-Cola Blak
MSNBC
reports on Coca Cola's new product launch: it's called Coca-Cola Blak and it tastes like coffee.
Many might have thought Coca-Cola was being a soda jerk for canning Vanilla Coke last month, but now we know the reason behind the move: The company was clearing space on supermarket shelves for a coffee-flavored drink called Coca-Cola Blak.
Apparently tired of losing the thirst-share of Generation X-ers addicted to Starbucks and Red Bull, the beverage behemoth will launch Coca-Cola Blak in coffee-craving France next month, with a worldwide rollout soon to follow.
"We believe we have created a new category of soft drink — an adult product in a carbonated beverage — and a whole new drinking experience. This brand is ideal for any part of the day when people are looking for renewed energy or simply to take a break," said Marc Mathieu, vice president of global core brands.
We assume when he says "any part of the day," he means anytime that does not precede sleeping.
Coca-Cola says that the drink will be in a can, and be a sort of fizzy soft-drink/coffee hybrid. Which is pretty odd, if you ask us. Still, we'll try one, just on the off-chance it tastes good. But we're not thrilled that it's a "mid-calorie" drink. Either make it a diet drink, or go all out with the calories and taste. That's the way we see it.

What Gifts are People Searching For?
A new study from Comscore reveals which holiday gifts consumers are searching for online. It is no surprise that the popular iPod and hard-to-find Xbox 360 have topped consumer searches. Harry Potter was also popular thanks to the release of the 6th book, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, in July and the recent release of the Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire film which is now in theatres. Here were the most popular searches in November.
iPod - 6.6 million searches
Xbox 360 - 5.0 million searches
Harry Potter - 4.8 million searches
Star Wars - 2.5 million searches
Barbie - 2.1 million searches
PlayStation - 1.9 million searches
The above data shows searches for November according to Comscore. We expect that Narnia books and products might creep into December's top search boosted by the films strong box office debut.

Gifts For the Gadget Lovers: The Sony Sony MiniDV Handycam
Talk about your fabulous holiday gifts: the new Sony DCR-PC55 MiniDV Handycam Camcorder w/10x Optical Zoom is a luxury tech item that will thrill any gadget-lover, camera buff or budding spy. The advantage of the new MiniDV Handycam is its size: it's small enough to fit into a pocket. It retails for $899.99, but you can find it at the bricks and mortar Sharper Image stores or the paper catalogue for $799.00 (they don't seem to have it in stock at the online store.) But it is available from Sharper Image through Amazon.com, if you want to order it online. The Amazon price appears a tiny bit better than that in the catalogue, at least as of today. It comes in red, black or silver.
Obviously, if you are going to sacrifice the weight of a normal camcorder, something else has to go: in this case it's resolution. Most reports say the handycam works great in daylight, but that resolution suffers a bit in low-light situations. But the point is its portability. It also has a USB interface, so you can stream your video directly over the Web, which is most handy. The LCD panel is 3" with a hybrid touch panel, the ability to capture still images at 640x480 resolution onto a Memory Stick, which isn't the highest resolution for still pictures, but is passable. Of course, we maintain that you should use a great digital camera for stills and use a separate camcorder for videos.
But then again, we're gadget-happy around here. And we really want one of these stylin' little handycams.

Tiny MP3 Player a Big Seller Online
The iPod has a very small rival. The mobiBLU Cube is a 1 inch MP3 playing cube that is currently only available at walmart.com in the U.S. Baynews9 reports that walmart.com is selling over 1,000 of the cubes online per day.
Raul Vazquez, vice president of marketing at walmart.com, estimated that traffic on the Web site was up double digits this past weekend over a year ago. The most popular item is a one-inch cube-shaped digital music player that's available only online - 1,000 units of the $100 cube, are selling per day, he said.
Some of the mobiiBLU features include a FM radio tuner, an OLED display, a built-in clock and a sleep timer. It has a built-in voice recorder which may help students record lectures from their professors. It also has a USB 2.0 flash drive so you can connect it to your PC to transfer files. A UPI article, which calls mobiBLU a "sugar-cube-sized competitor" to the iPod, discusses the comparison of the mobiBLU Cube to the iPod Shuffle:
In August, PC Magazine's Web site called the Cube "the smallest, most impressively full-featured flash player we've seen yet."
The Cube features an FM radio receiver and voice-recording capabilities, can be used as a portable USB drive and comes in six colors. It has no ports other than the headphone jack, which is used to connect to computers and to charge the battery as well as to listen (the flip side is that one can't listen to the Cube while charging it).
The battery life is 8-10 hours, falling short of the iPod Shuffle's 12-hour capability.
"We compete head-on with the iPod Shuffle," said Bob Fullerton, director of product marketing for mobiBLU's parent company, Hyun Won Inc., "and many reviewers give the Cube a better recommendation than the Shuffle for our added features."
The Cube comes in two versions: a 512 MB for $99.72 and a 1GB version for $129. There are also six colors to choose from: black, pink, silver, blue, red and orange. The mobiBLU Cube can be found for sale here on walmart.com. More information about the mobiBLU can also be found on the mobiBLU website.

Christmas at the Lucky Horseshoe Stable
Hearthsong makes some great educational and imaginative gifts for children. We really like the Lucky Horshoe Stable collection, which starts out with a stable in three sections. You can add horses, a horse van, a fence, riders, an equestrian rug, a jump set: you name it.
Your kids (ages 3 and up) can use the stable as a springboard for "let's pretend" games, which they aren't going to get from the computer. It's important for children to exercise their role-playing and creative abilities, and this set is a great way to do that. And, of course, it's never too young to start a young girl's obsession with horses.

Our Favorite Candles
We are so picky about candles. Other than vanilla (which is fairly difficult to do badly, although it is possible), so many floral scented candles just smell ghastly. Our absolute favorite are from the MarketAtHome.com. They are the real deal: made with essential oils, not cheap perfume. They have tea lights, votives and larger candles, as well. The Sandalwood is out of this world, as is the Lemon Grass and L'Orangerie. Actually, you really can't go wrong with any of their scents, and they have special candles for the holidays, as well. We feel uplifted just as soon as we light one, and the scent wafts through room. Actually, you really shouldn't light that Sandalwood candle if you need to get any work done at all. Because you'll just be too relaxed to be of any use to anyone at all.

Pack Your Bags and Go
After years of fighting total strangers at the luggage carousel to retrieve your black suitcase (that looks exactly like every other passenger's suitcase, down to the red curly ribbon on the handle to identify it), savvy travelers are abandoning the whole black luggage paradigm and going with something with a bit more color. So it gets dirty? Who cares? Wipe it off and keep going -- the wear just shows what a world traveler you are.
From hot pink to Nautica's neon yellow, the hottest luggage now is a) softside made of a tough material b) has really sturdy, bigger wheels c) is expandable and d) comes in unusual colors. We like the Victorinox brand which is made by the Swiss Army company -- the ones that make the Swiss Army Knives. It's tough, ergonomically correct, and all the pieces work together. We especially like the really large 27" bag for overseas travels. We also like the wheeled boarding tote which fits neatly on top of any of the other, larger wheeled pieces. The luggage has a lifetime warranty and Victorinox is offering $50 and $100 off when you buy several pieces. You can find this nice Werks Traveler 2.0 24" Wheeled Upright (pictured, right at Bag 'N Baggage bricks and mortar stores or online at Bagnbaggage.com. The color pictured here is Sapphire, but it also comes in Black, Platinum, Red and Hot Pink and retails for just under $300. If you wander into Bag 'N Baggage at the mall, a salesperson will be too happy to tell you all the rest of the features: lifetime warranty, all the pickets and zippers, the funky handles etc. Bottom line: it's good quality luggage and would make a great holiday gift for any traveler.

Great Gifts Under $100: Illuninated Universe Globe
The Discovery Store has some really great holiday gifts for kids and adults. We really like this Illuminated Universe Globe. By day, it's a handsome looking globe on a brass stand, which would look great in the den or in a bedroom. By night, the the globe is illuminated from within, and shows the astromonical view of the night sky, featuring 88 constellations. An automatic sensor turns night view on when it's dark. The scale is 1:42,000,000, and the dimensionsare 12.5" L x 12.5" W x 17" H.
This would make a great gift for any astronomy buff, or any middle-schooler or highschooler who likes science.

iPod Likely Top Gift for 2005
Just try to escape the news about how popular the iPod is this year. The iPod is topping many of this year's electronics and toy gift lists. The EcommerceTimes says iPods are likely to be this year's top gift.
Expect to see more. IPods and other portable MP3 Latest News about MP3 music players are forecast to be the top electronics gift pick for the holidays, paving the way for a season of robust sales in the consumer electronics category.
It's a perfect storm of factors, analysts say: Prices of some of the most coveted goods have fallen as much as 30 percent, and there's a critical mass of shoppers who are ready to shell out for such pricey gifts as high-definition TVs and iPods.
"You have a tremendous amount of new products that are out there that have finally reached the point of mass appeal," said Sean Wargo, industry analyst for the Consumer Electronics Association.
The New York Times also says the iPod is the most coveted consumer electronics item of 2005 along with Microsoft's hard-to-find Xbox 360. The addition of video to the iPod with downloadable episodes from television shows for $1.99 has made the iPod even more attractive. Just this week NBC cut a deal to offer show episodes like the deal Apple cut with ABC to offer episodes from popular ABC shows like Lost.
Even old ipods are popular. An article in Information Week notes that older iPods sell on auction sites like eBay, as people sell their older models when they upgrade to the latest version. eBay has an iPod section which lists tens of thousands of active auctions for iPods and iPod accessories.
There is also a huge market of accessory products created for the iPod. These accessories include cases, docks, adapters, speakers, ear plugs, clothing and remote controls. CNET has an feature called the Ultimate iPod Accessories and iLounge has a long list of iPod accessories. Some iPod accessories we have discussed here on ShoppingBlog.com include iPod shirts, Juicy iPod holder, iPod costumes and Gucci iPod cases. There are also many handmade iPod accessories like these cases available from Pixelgirlshop. Apple refers to this growing accessory market as the iPod economy. "The iPod economy is thriving with over 1,000 accessories now available," says Greg Joswiak, Apple's vice president of Worldwide iPod Product Marketing. "There are more ways than ever to get the perfect accessory to complement your iPod for use at home, on the go and in the car."
It is this accessory market that makes the iPod great for gift giving. Even if someone you know already has an iPod it isn't hard to find an ccessory that they don't have. You can find iPods and iPod accessories at most electronics retailers. There are also Apple stores located nationwide. Online there is the official Apple iPod website, Amazon.com's iPod Store, XtremeMac add the iStore. ShoppersShop.com also provides a list of iPod retailers.

Adorable Holiday Gifts For Children
We absolutely adore the new Animal Rain Gear sold at the National Geographic online store. Your little angel can dress from head to toe in style during the worst downpour and still stay dry. Each set is sold together or separately. The Ladybug set, for example, features cute ladybug galoshes, a ladybug umbrella and a ladybug slicker (not shown). They come in five styles: Butterfly, Bumblebee, Frog, Ladybug, and Dinosaur. Pictured are the galoshes and umbrellas for the Bumblebee, Frog and Ladybug ensembles.
One entire set is $59.95 and has the advantage of being a nice, practical gift that the child will also view as a fun toy. Of course, just one cool umbrella ($12.95) would also make a great gift. You can find these animal ensembles at the National Geographic Online Store. The Kidorable rain products can also be found here on Amazon.com.

Cute Holiday Gifts Under $100: The Saints and Sinners Pajama Combo Gift Set
So you want to give her some pajamas for Christmas or Hannukah. So far, so good. But first you must ascertain: is she a satin or a flannel kind of girl? If she's more of a satin gal, we like these satin pajamas from Victoria's Secret. They have velvet-trim cuffs, a button-front top with notch collar, and an elastic waist bottom. They're polyester satin, so you just throw them in the wash. After lugging our real silk pajamas to the drycleaners umpteen times, we decided that a couple of pairs of faux satin would come in handy, as well, and they have. They're on sale at Victoria's Secret for only $39.
But what if she really would rather be wrapped in a super-comfy, yet ghastly-looking voluminous flannel nightgown? Well, then it's off to L.L. Bean for this Tartan Flannel Nightgown which also retails for $39. Clearly, it's some kind of sign: you could give both as sort of a Sinner and Saint Pajama Combo Set.
But back to the nightgown of all men's nightmares. It's made of double-brushed cotton flannel which will get softer with every washing. When you're sick, there's nothing better. And if you tell anyone that we own any flannel whatsoever, you'll be sorry.

Cute Gifts Under $100: Ugg Slippers
Slippers are not a boring gift, if they're Uggs. We love our UGGAustralia.com coquette slippers. We have them in pink, but the other colors are just as cute. The only color we're a tiny bit wary of is the black. Our UGG black boots tend to rub a bit of black off on our beautifully manicured feet, unless we wear socks. We hear that this problem has been fixed, but just to be safe, why not order pink or blue? This is a super gift for anyone who gets cold feet in the morning. They retail for $75.00.

The Inflatable Snowglobe Craze
If you are into inflatables a News10Now article says the inflatable Snowglobes are becoming extremely popular. These inflatable decorations make it look like it is actually snowing inside -- like the smaller snow globes that have been around for years.
"This year we really like the globes. They're a really popular item," said shopper Brenda Way.
Snow globes certainly are a popular item. The globe, which lights up and displays a continuous snowstorm within, recently sold out at both Lowe's and Home Depot in Rome.
"They came in maybe two weeks before Thanksgiving, and they were gone before Thanksgiving," said Brent Scott, a Rome Home Depot associate.
"Pretty much every person walking in the store had to stop and stare at that thing I know I always did walking past it, you know I think little kids looked like they wanted to live inside that thing," said Mike Stiadle, Rome Lowe's store nanager.
These inflatable Snowglobes sound hot.
It sure would be cool to be the only house on your street that has one.
Just remember the first rule of holiday decorations is "don't panic." Keep telling yourself that it is just an inflatable holiday decoration. Keep that in mind as you read this next quote from a news story in the Fort Myers News-Press.
Customers all around the country, including an enthusiastic Lee County contingency, are snapping up the $199 8-foot blow-up snow globes. They contain more than 1.5 million white pellets that swirl around like snow. The "snow" in the globe looks especially real when it's blowing around Santa Claus, a snowman and a Christmas tree. The globes take about four minutes to inflate.
Made by Gemmy Industries, the globes also come in smaller sizes, but the large varieties are the most popular.
"We are already sold out," said Joe Dinnegan, sales specialist at Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse in Cape Coral. "I don't think we're going to get any more."
The Snowglobes are listed online here at homedepot.com but they are not sold online so you should check Home Depot stores in your area. Amazon.com has them listed but the item appears to be out of stock. We did find some online at Skymall and Westminsterfun.com. There are probably other online carriers as well. You can see the Snowglobes in action on the manufacturer's website. The manufacturer, Gemmy, also shows all the different kinds of Snowglobes.

Winter Storms Increase Demand for Snowblowers
Once the snow starts falling some people make the decision to purchase the snowblower they avoided during the summer and fall sales events. An article in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel says snowblowers are a hot item and there are some shortages being reported in the Milwaukee area. The Plains, Midwest and now the Mid-Atlantic states have already seen snow this year. The article says there are some advances in technology worth noting if you have not shopped for a snowblower in a while.
Snowblower technology has come a long way in recent years as the machines have become easier to use. Some of the biggest changes have been "ease of use" features such as better steering systems, Blewett said.
"Things that were optional before, like hand warmers, drift cutters and headlights, are now expected," he said.
Smaller, compact snowblowers are a hot item, Fette said, as consumers want machines that are lightweight to push and maneuver.
Now you will know to look for lightweight snowblowers with hand warmers and headlights when you head off to Home Depot, Sears or Lowe's. Northern Tool and Amazon.com also carry snowblowers that can be ordered online.

A Cashmere Robe For Madame
Now that it looks like most of the nation is in for some very cold weather, it's time to think about luxurious robes and slippers. We like this cashmere robe from Bloomingdales.com, which retails for $289.00. The robe comes in off-white (called "Snow"), blue and black.
This would make a great present, especially since it comes in a wide range of sizes: from Small Petite to 4x (plus-size), and all sizes in between. We'll take the black, of course, so we don't have to lug the white one into the dry cleaners every week.

The Lovely Burberry Scarf
Temperatures are dropping fast, and we're never without our Burberry Cashmere Muffler. Those wool mufflers are too scratchy; cashmere is warm and soft. Measuring 66" x 12", the scarf is the perfect length to around one's neck, or over one's head if the weather turns really nasty. We're fond of our original novacheck scarf with fringe trim, but Burberry is also making some new colors: pale pink, pale blue, emerald green, red, magenta and sapphire blue. The scarf retails for $250 at Burberry.com. We'll take one of each, please.

Eyeing a Silver Cuff Bracelet
If you're into big (and you know we are), this Lois Hill sterling silver cuff bracelet is just the thing we'd love to receive this holiday season.
The bracelet is handcrafted in sterling silver, with flexible links. It's 7 1/2" long, and 1 3/4" wide and has a nice heft. It retails for $424.00 at Nordstrom.com, and would look fabulous with a black cashmere sweater and some unusual sterling silver earrings (we're looking). Oh, and don't forget the boots. There must be boots.
