Nicole, Tom, Kate and the Diva
Nicole Kidman isn't holding a grudge against former husband Tom Cruise. She has
reportedly sent off a $2,800 Baccarat Diva vase to Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes as a wedding present. Tom and Katie (we just can't remember to call her Kate) are said to be getting married in Rome at the Hassler Hotel or somewhere near there in November.
So, Nicole headed down to Neiman Marcus in Los Angeles and purchased the vase.
The actress chose the Diva vase while shopping for a gift at Los Angeles' Neiman Marcus last week, according to In Touch magazine.
A store insider claims Kidman provided her own sealed card and asked for it to be sent with her gift to Cruise's home.
Kidman's ex will wed his fiancee, Katie Holmes, in Italy next month.
The Diva vase is certainly an....interesting choice. Nicole has excellent taste, so we're thinking that the Diva vase was on the bridal registry. Because we all know how annoying it is when guests don't buy gifts you've taken all theat time to list on a registry. Instead -- god forbid -- they think "Oh, I'll get something unusual that they'll never forget." Those unusual gifts are the first things that are returned after the honeymoon.
Lesson to be learned: Always buy something on the wedding registry. Now as to why in the world TomKat registered that hideous vase that looks more like a holder for some kind of strange marital aid than a receptacle for flowers, well that's another issue entirely.

Web Shoppers Waiting Longer Before Starting Holiday Purchases
Internet Retailer is reporting a small trend that may be slightly distrubing for online retailers. The IR article is discussing a BizRate study that finds online shoppers are delaying their start to online holiday shopping this year. The study found 33% plan to start online purchases before the end of October -- that's a 5% drop from last year's 38%. The study also found that 14% plan to wait until December before they stop shopping that's 2% above the 2006 figure of 12%. Fortunately, more plan to start shopping in November this year than last year.
The study also notes, however, that more online shoppers (39%) this year plan to begin their online holiday shopping in early to mid-November, up from 36% last year, and 15% will begin Thanksgiving weekend, compared to 14% last year. Shopzilla conducted this year's survey for the 7-day, Monday-through-Sunday period Oct. 16-22 and compared it to Oct. 17-23 of last year.

Kate Spade is Ready to Party
Kate Spade makes the cutest flats and skimmers. We love the style she named "Party," which is a gorgeous ballet-shoe flat in suede with a gorgeous stone ornament on the toe. The shoes have a half-inch heel. The plum suede is shown here, but the shoe also comes in black suede, navy suede, chocolate suede and camel suede. We find that Kate Spade's shoes run a tad on the small side, and usually order a half size up from our normal size, depending on the style of the shoe. These shoes are suede, so they will stretch a bit, of course.
The Party shoes retail for just under $400 at Zappos.com.

New Plastic Surgery Trend: Eyelash Transplants
If you thought the plastic surgery trend was slowing down a bit as women go to injectables such as Botox and Restalyne, think again. The hottest new procedure is to have eyelash transplants in order to have long, lush eyelashes and reduce the need for mascara.
Using procedures pioneered by the hair loss industry for balding men, surgeons are using "plug and sew" techniques to give women long, sweeping lashes once achieved only by glued on extensions and thick lashings of mascara.
And just like human hair -- for that is the origin -- these lashes just keep on growing.
"Longer, thicker lashes are an ubiquitous sign of beauty. Eyelash transplantation does for the eyes what breast augmentation does for the figure," said Dr Alan Bauman, a leading proponent of eyelash transplants.
"This is a brand new procedure for the general public (and) it is going to explode," Bauman told Reuters during what was billed as the world's first live eyelash surgery workshop for about 40 surgeons from around the world.
Under the procedure, a small incision is made at the back of the scalp to remove 30 or 40 hair follicles which are carefully sewn one by one onto the patient's eyelids. Only light sedation and local anesthetics are used and the cost is around $3,000 an eye.
The technique was first confined to patients who had suffered burns or congenital malformations of the eye. But word spread and about 80 percent are now done for cosmetic reasons.
*****
The surgery is not for everyone. The transplanted eyelashes grow just like head hair and need to be trimmed regularly and sometimes curled. Very curly head hair makes for eyelashes with too much kink.
We think eyelash transplants are wonderful and certainly worth it for burn patients, chemo survivors whose eyelashes don't grow back and for alopecia sufferers. But the idea of having surgery just because our eyelashes require some good lengthening mascara to look great is just too much for us. There are plenty of other procedures we'd consider before we went that route.
Can you imagine having to cut your eyelashes because they grow half an inch a month, just like your hair? And having to curl them so they don't droop down onto your cheeks? The mind boggles.
When the need for extreme eyelash length strikes us, we'll go for these lovely Shu Uemura False Eyelashes #1, which retail for $15 at Shu Uemura. And if you're feeling a bit more fashion-forward, you can see Shu Uemura's dramatic new Tokyo Lash Bar Collection of wild eyelashes that look like feathers, wings and everything in between here.

The survey found that the witch costume is by far the most popular costume choice for adults. Other popular costume choices include pirate, vampire, cat and clown. That's the

Adult costumes tend to be either scary, sexy or silly. A New York Times article quotes costume merchants who say the sexier women's costumes are some of the top sellers this year.
Salacious costumes — the most visible reminder that Halloween is no longer the sole domain of children — have been around longer than plastic Grim Reaper scythes. But there has been an emergence of "ultrasexy" costumes in the last couple of years, according to Christa Getz, the purchasing director for BuyCostumes.com, which sells outfits with names like Little Bo "Peep Show" and Miss Foul Play.
"Probably over 90 to 95 percent of our female costumes have a flirty edge to them," Ms. Getz said, adding that sexy costumes are so popular the company had to break its "sexy" category into three subdivisions this year.
Heather Siegel, the vice president of HalloweenMart.com, said her company’s sexy category is among its most popular. (The two best-selling women's costumes are a low-cut skin-tight referee uniform and a pinup-girl-inspired prisoner outfit called Jail Bait.)
"Almost everybody gets dressed up really, really sexy for it," said Carrie Jean Bodner, a senior at Cornell University in Ithaca who wrote about the abundance of skimpy Halloween garb for The Cornell Daily Sun last year. "Even the girls who wouldn't dream of going to class without their pearls and pullovers."
One major problem with a sexier costume trend is when costumes meant for kids are also made to look sexy. Target recently pulled some of these youth costumes after parents complained.
Other adult costume trends include dressing up as politicians or media moguls. George W. Bush and Martha Stewart ranked high in a BizRate Research survey.
No need to count hanging chads, president George W. Bush was the clear cut winner among men in the vote for most popular choice of costumes with 47% choosing the Commander-in-Chief over two other newsworthy subjects, Mel Gibson (36%) and Tom Cruise (18%).
Females would rather dress as domestic diva Martha Stewart (54%) than heiress Paris Hilton (27%) or television personality Star Jones (19%).
Overall, the pirates trend appears to be one of the most dominant adult costume trends. The Deseret News reports that the pirates trend is boosted not just by the popularity of the recent pirates film but also because it is not difficult to dress up as a pirate.
"Pirates is one category that really has been genderless and ageless," reports Deborah Radman, public relations manager for national chain Party City. "It has a lot to do with the popularity of the movie. Kids think it's cool, and adults can dress up fairly easily."
In a pinch, a procrastinator could throw on a white shirt, grab a bandanna, eye patch and plastic sword - all easy to find this time of year - and be ready to go, she suggests.
The pirate costume is the procrastinator's friend this year. A Chicago Sun-Times article says the Capt. Jack Sparrow costume is a runaway favorite in Chicago. They article also lists a wide range of costumes that are popular this year including historical figures like Caesar and Cleopatra; the Twister board game costume; the Grim Reaper; religious costumes like monks and priests; 70s and retro costumes and athlete costumes like cheerleaders and football players.

Le Top has the cutest Halloween costumes for infants this year. Our favorite is the green dragon, but the bunny comes in a close second. But the Giraffe and the Dalmation costumes are also just darling. The costumes are soft, hooded and cover baby completely so he can ride along for some trick or treat fun on Halloween night. Avoid Ebay Deadbeats
Ed and Steve Klink, who run an eBay watchdog website called eBayersThatSuck.com, also publish a book called Dawn of the eBay Deadbeats: True Tales of Treachery, Lies, and Fraud from the Dark Recesses of the World's Largest Online Auction Marketplace. The book tells stories about a woman whose wedding was tainted by moth-ridden tuxedoes, a collector duped out of a $16,000 vintage Spiderman comic, and the family-man trucker who lost a whopping $27,000 buying a rig that didn't exist. Here are some of the tips the Klink brothers offer to help honest eBay users avoid getting ripped off:
Be wary if the person requests only one form of payment
Read carefully, some scams depend on a lengthy description that can be
deceptive.
Never be put off for two weeks on a deal or you risk being unable to
stop the credit card transaction
Don't use Western Union or MoneyGram when paying for auction purchases
Ask yourself the following: Who is this person? Is there a sob story?
Does this money have to be sent immediately? Does this offer sound too
good to be true?
This time of the year is when buyers should be especially careful because the eBay Deadbeats will be using their very best tricks.

The Handbags of Horror
Those naughty folks over at Radar Online have done a features called Horrifying Handbags, in which they show a number of fall designer handbags next to the character from the horror film that Radar believes they were inspired by.
First up is the Ingrid Patchwork Hobo by Isabella Fiore, which Radar likens to the infamous Chucky the horrible doll who has terrorized moviegoers for years.
Note the gaudy colors. The diagonal zipperish scars. The carroty tufts and deceptive "playful" quality. Do not leave this purse alone with your son! Unless you're tired of raising him and would find his death convenient.
Isabelle Fiore gets slammed by Radar again for her "lizardy monstrosity."
The ancient amphibian-freak from 1954's Creature From the Black Lagoon boasts "centuries of passion pent up in his savage heart." Though equally repellent to the touch, this Isabelle Fiore bag ($650) has little to recommend it beyond a "zip-top" and two unsavory pom-poms. Furthermore, the Creature only lashes out in self-defense while the Charm Hobo spent months in a dark basement plotting—actually, the less said about the Charm Hobo the better. We don't want to encourage any more copycat school shootings.
Andrew Marc and Miu Miu also get their share of withering criticism. We're afraid that we'll never look at a Isabella Fiore bag in quite the same way.

Soft Claws For Kitty
We adore cats, but sometimes the little darlings make us a tad peeved when they decide to exercise their claws on some expensive furniture -- or a lovely rug. We don't hold with de-clawing and we're not thrilled with the idea of spraying that repellant stuff everywhere. Then a vet told us about Soft Claws.
Soft claws are soft rubber claws that fit over your cat's claws. You glue them on and the cat never knows they're there. Each set lasts between 4 to 6 weeks, although we've heard from people who say they last longer. Each kit contains
contains 40 nail caps, six applicators tips, two tubes of adhesive, and complete instructions. They come in small, medium and large and are for cats over three weeks old -- we wouldn't use them on kittens, by the way.
The claws come in clear, red, blue and pink. And for Halloween, they've done a set in black and orange, which would look great on a black cat.
They retail for $19.99 at
DrsFosterandSmith.com.
Oh, and yes -- this is for only recommended for pet owners who enjoy doing pet manicures and who have lots of patience. And if you have one of those cats who hates you touching his paws, this is probably not the way to go.

The Too Faced Lip Injection Kit
We were looking for some cute gifts for friends with fall birthdays, when we stumbled across this limited edition Lip Injection Extreme Plumping Collection from Too Faced. The products together retail for $62.50, but the kit is only $29.50.
We all know that plumper lips are all the rage now and some of us would rather avoid lip injections (So painful! So awful-looking unless the injector is a real artist!) So we chose this set which includes tiny version os Lip Injection in Technocolor for instant fullness; Lip Injection Extreme treatment; and the Lip Injection Mask spa treatment.
But then we got to thinking, "How rude would it be to give a friend lip plumper?" Isn't that like saying, "Hey, chicken lips! Get a clue and plump up those pathetic lips!"? So we kept the kit instead. Because that's the kind of good friends that we are.
The limited edition set is available at Sephora.com.

DermaDoctor's Masks For Halloween
DermaDoctor.com is an online store founded by dermatologist Dr. Audrey Kunin. So when we received her newsletter telling us about a great deal on Halloween masks, we admit we were a bit surprised. What masks was she offering? One with a woman with terrible acne? Perhaps a latex mask with perfect skin for those who are not so blessed by nature? We immediately clicked over to find that she meant facial masks not face masks for Halloween. And that's when we knew we've been spending way too much time decorating for Halloween and not enough time thinking about our skin.
So, the mask deal works like this: if you buy any of the skin care masks you get free UPS 2nd Day Air shipping on your entire order. The offer is good only for the domestic U.S. and lasts until October 31st. Just enter code MASK at checkout. You can get a further discount if you sign up for her email newsletter.
We've like the Neova Therapy Copper Moisture Mask ($65, for aging skin), the Peter Thomas Roth Therapeutic Sulfur Masque ($40, for acne-prone and oily skin) and Dr. Brandt Lineless Soothing Mask ($40 for stressed out skin).
And if you aren't in the market for a facial mask, you should still check out Dr. Kunin's great library of articles on skincare and aging. They're incredibly helpful. And doesn't she look cute as a witch flying by on her broomstick? Our dermatologist never does that. So far as we know, anyway.

eBay Cancels Mummy Auction
All Headline News reports that eBay pulled an auction for mummified human remains shortly after it was posted. The woman posting the mummy listing claimed she thought it was an "anatomical, medical use skeleton."
Lynn Sterling, the entrepreneurial woman responsible for the posting, told police officials that she had acquired the mummy for an old friend who had worked on a demolition project 30 years ago. Lynn stated that she had spoken with an attorney regarding the matter before posting the remains.
In a comment made to the Port Huron Times, Lynn stated, "It's an anatomical, medical use skeleton. I would never have put it on (eBay) if I thought it was anything other than an anatomical, medical thing."
According to one medical examiner involved in identifying the source and identity of the mummy, the auctioned item was an intact skeleton with segments of mummified tissue.
"It's very, very old. It's probably some type of anatomical dissection that was part of an anatomy class that over time got into the hands of somebody in the general public," the examiner explained.
Apparently, the mummy received one bid for $500 before the auction was pulled. Another news story says they are still trying to track down the origins of the mummy.

Louis Vuitton and Paris Fashion Week
Marc Jacobs described his collection for Louis Vuitton for Spring/Summer 2007 as "pretty, fragile, lovely and romantic." And so it was.
With Janet Jackson looking on from the front row, Jacobs sent a bevy of models down the runway in miniskirts, dresses and sperates done in tulle, ruched silk and Liberty prints. It was very romantic. Flowers were in the models' hair and in their handbags. The palette for spring is definitely subdued, with lots of cream, white, rose, grey and black. It was all very feminine and pretty.

The Peeps are Ready for Halloween
Just Born is making its popular Peeps candies for Halloween. The company says this is its second most popular holiday. Just Born's yellow Peeps are best known for their annual Easter appearance. The photograph on the right shows Just Born's pumpkin Peeps being made at the factory. Just Born also has a few recipes on its website for Halloween. They are also selling a Halloween decorating kit for Peeps.
Peeps are not the only sweets being prepared for Halloween. Susan Fussell, director of communications with the National Confectioners Association, told John D. Homan at the Southern Illinosian that 9 billion pieces of candy corn are made each Halloween.
Susan Fussell, director of communications with the National Confectioners Association, said that when people think of Halloween, they naturally think of Trick or Treating and the purchase of all varieties of candy.
"The Halloween season has been No. 1 in candy sales for a number of years now," Fussell said. "It's pretty safe to say that sales have increased between 1 and 3 percent each year. Themed candies are a large part of the sales. Would you believe that more than nine billion pieces of candy corn are made each year. And the candies that are most popular at Halloween are usually popular year 'round with candy bars, gum and licorice.
"Novelty candies are also popular - candies that include toys that spin, cackle and make any kind of noise. Baby Bottle Pops, for example, are popular again this Halloween. The bottle pop is orange with black sugar powder, which dyes your tongue black. The more gruesome, the better. Kids are crazy about gross out candies because their parents don't like them."
For the more elaborate Halloween treat there is also Godiva's Lucky the cat. Hopefully, there will be lots of toothbrushing to go along with all this candy consumption. An article from Healthy Wealthy nWise lists some non-candy alternatives like bags of pretzels, rubber spiders and helium balloons.

The Nerd Baby Alphabet
Award-winning graphics artist Tiffany Ard worked for large corporations for 12 years. But when she had children, she wanted to take her art to a different, more whimsical place. Now she has her own business creating custom fine art for children's rooms. She works in a variety of media and can create specialized artwork to match your child's interests and favorite colors.
Tiffany has just created an absolutely fabulous item called the "Nerd Baby Alphabet." The cards feature the alphabet with a scientific bent for your budding little astronaut or theoretical physicist. We think the Nerd Baby Alphabet isn't actually nerdy at all -- but it certainly is geeky. And remember, Geeky is In. So, your tot will grow up knowing that: A is for Atom, B is for Binary Code, H is for Hydrogen Bonding, K is for Kepler's Third Law, V is for Virus and Z is for Zoological Oddity. The cards are printed on bright white acid-free cardstock. They are best suited for display, but Tiffany says some customers have had the cards laminated so they can survive "full on toddler abuse."
The set of 26 letters in the 8"x10" size is $45, and the set in the 5"x7" size retails for $30. The Nerd Alphabet is available on Tiffany's website at TiffanyArd.com.

Discount Retailers Court Hot Designers
The New York Times reports on an interesting trend: discount stores such as Kohl's, Wal-Mart, Sears and K-Mart are all opening offices in New York City to be closer to trendy designers that are now creating lower-priced lines for the stores. Vera Wang didn't want to fly to Wisconsin to create a trendy line for Kohl's. So Kohl's came to New York.
The sudden interest in Manhattan real estate highlights a major shift under way in discount retailing, by far the largest segment of the industry. Tired of waiting for suppliers to grant them access to the most fashionable clothing, the chains have decided to design apparel on their own, ensuring that their lower-income customers can buy skinny jeans and satchel bags at the same time as shoppers at higher-end stores.
But, as the discount chains quickly discovered, designers do not flock to Bentonville, Ark., or Troy, Mich., because most of their business is in New York City. So the discount retailers are coming to them.
Consider the case of Ms. Wang, the couture women's clothing designer whose wedding gowns have been worn by Sharon Stone and Uma Thurman. To woo her, Kohl's executives shuttled back and forth between Wisconsin and New York over the last year, spending hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars.
So when Ms. Wang agreed to create a line of clothing, shoes and home goods for the chain in August, a permanent office in the city became a necessity. "To maintain a relationship like this, we felt it was important to have people on the ground in New York," said Peggy Eskenasi, the executive vice president for product development at Kohl's.
To make it anywhere in the world of fashion, it turns out, low-cost stores have to make it here first.
For decades, clothing vendors have routinely held back the most fashionable clothes from far-away discount chains, first supplying them to department stores and specialty clothing chains. As a result, stores like Kohl's, Kmart and Wal-Mart became resigned to selling last season’s trends, year after year.
But with design offices in Manhattan, where trends materialize on the street, discount retailers no longer have to wait for permission from clothing suppliers to carry stylish merchandise.
"That is the advantage of doing it yourself in a place like New York," Lisa Schultz, the chief merchant at Sears, said in an interview at the company’s New York design office. "We control our own destiny."
For all their progress, though, the chains are hardly advertising their arrival in New York, perhaps because they are uneasy about their presence in a city whose designers have long scoffed at discount retailing.
None of the companies have large signs outside their offices, and some have no sign at all. The only evidence that the world's largest retailer, Wal-Mart, has a two-floor office at Fifth Avenue and 31st Street is a passing reference to the company in the building's lobby index.
*****
Harold D. Reiter, the chief executive of Herbert Mines Associates, an executive recruitment firm focused on the retail industry, said chains like Wal-Mart and Kohl's "are doing real design now.
It's real fashion. To get real adult designers, you have to do it in New York City."
The fashion and retail worlds are changing -- there's no doubt about that. We think it's pretty interesting that the New York design spaces look just like the design spaces of any fashion forward company and don't look a bit like the Midwestern suit and tie corporate headquarters.
The Vera Wang line for Kohl's will be called Very Vera by Vera Wang and will be available in all Kohl's stores and on Kohls.com by the fall of 2007. The line will include sportswear, lingerie, leather accessories, shoes, linens, towels and jewelry.

Now you could blow your entire daily calorie allotment on those tiny Snickers bars during Halloween (so stressful answering the door all night...what's a girl to do but take some fortifying nibbles of chocolate to keep her going?) But think -- if you're going to splurge on Halloween, why not have a fabulous Godiva chocolate? We like Lucky the cat, which is made of pure chocolate. He retails for $10 at your local Godiva retailer or at Godiva.com. We won't tell.
If, on the other hand, your plans involve dressing up in a trampy costume and partaking of the demon rum, you could always have Lucky waiting for you at home to cap off your night of wild abandon. Nothing says "welcome home, party girl" like Godiva chocolate, we always say.

TMX Elmo Craze Hits Ebay
Ebay currently lists 5724 auction listings for TMX Elmo, the hot new toy from Mattel. TMX Elmo has been hard to find and this shortage combined with strong demand is creating a marketplace for TMX Elmo on eBay. The retail price of TMX Elmo is $39.99 and listings on eBay are two or three times that price. Auctionbytes.com has an article about the eBay TMX Elmo buzz. They revealed the following "extreme" Elmo eBay stas.
A lot of 30 TMX Elmos sold for $3000 with a Buy It Now in Sept. 27. Shipping was $100. Yes, that's $100 per Elmo, not including shipping.
A lot of 20 Elmos sold for $2500 with 1 bid on Sept. 22.
An individual TMX Elmo sold for $299.99 on Sept. 20, one of the highest single prices for this doll I found on eBay.
Some of the lowest prices for new TMX Elmos were around only $43, with most of those being around Sept. 19 and 20, close to the date Elmo just went on sale.
Prices for TMX Elmos on amazon.com (all from private sellers) start at $137.99, with 103 available, and go all the way up to $2449.99 for an "English version."
A lot of the TMX Elmo's being auctioned on eBay are being sold in lots of 3, 4, 5, 10 or more Elmos. There is even a lot of 50. Some of these auctions appear to be starting bids at $100 per Elmo. Many of the auctions that include a But It Now option are listing Buy It Now prices of $100+ per Elmo. However, there are some bids near closing that are at lower amounts in the $75 to $85 per Elmo range. Mattel is still shipping Elmo dolls to stores so that may keep the prices from getting too much higher on eBay. Of course, many of these Elmos are purchased almost immediately by savvy eBay merchants and resold on eBay. There may be a subtle diffence in price based on whether the Elmo box has a Warning sticker or a Top Secret sticker. The Wikipedia entry says the Warning sticker version is more rare.

Shoppers in Hysterics Over TMX Elmo
TMX Elmo is in the early lead for this year's hottest toy. TMX Elmo is an extreme tickle toy with three interactive tickle spots on his chin, tummy or toe. He explodes into fits of hysterical laughter when he is tickled. You can see an example of Elmo's laughing fits by watching this video that shows Elmo in action. The dog in the video isn't sure what to think of Elmo's hysterics.
Shoppers are rushing out to buy the hard-to-find toy which quickly disappears from shelves shortly after new shipments arrive. Toledoblade.com reports that experts are saying there has never been a toy this hot so early and that Mattel may sell as many as three million of the super ticklish Elmo dolls.
Mattel produced only 700,000 of the toys, generating speculation that it may have deliberately over-hyped the item and limited the quantity in an effort to create a hot toy. Mattel and Fisher-Price denied such accusations.
Jim Silver, editor and publisher of Toy Wishes magazine, said he accepted Mattel denials. No toy has been this hot this early, he said.
Sales have exceeded expectations by five times and although Mattel projected it could sell 700,000 Elmos, it is on track to sell 3 million, he said.
"In the first 24 hours they sold 250,000. Nobody plans on that. If you sell 400,000 units for a season, it is considered a hit, and 500,000 is a huge hit," Mr. Silver said.
Elmo will have tough competition when the new game consoles from Sony and Nintendo are released in November but for now he is the hottest toy. Many news stories are getting the holiday season off to a hectic and stressful start by warning shoppers to act fast before the must-have items like TMX Elmo are gone.
A warning to procrastinators: Better shop early, especially online, if you want the must-have holiday toys.
Already, toy sellers such as KB Toys Inc., Toys 'R' Us Inc. and Wal-Mart Stores Inc. are doing all they can to get their hands on more hot toys, particularly T.M.X. Elmo from Mattel Inc.'s Fisher-Price, whose better-than-expected sales are making it increasingly likely to be the must-have toy for the season.
Consumers don't need this early holiday stress. Unfortunately, TMX Elmo probably won't get any easier to find. According to Jim Silver, editor of Toy Wishes, told CNN/Money that the complex technology means it takes longer to make the dolls.
Jim Silver, editor of Toy Wishes magazine, said Elmo T.M.X. has the potential of being one of the blockbuster toys of the year, especially in the pre-school category.
However, the new Elmo could very well become "extremely" hard to find.
"Because the technology is so complicated, it's taking longer to make the new Elmo. Fisher-Price is only making between 50 to 60 percent of the full-year production of the new Elmo," Silver said, adding that Fisher-Price typically produces a million and a half units of Elmo for the holidays.
"There's going to be a shortage for T.M.X.," he said.
If you can't find TMX Elmo at your local toy store or at one of the online toy retailers (check TMX Elmo's pages at Amazon and Etoys) then you may have to opt for eBay. There are already thousands of TMX Elmo listings appearing on eBay which usually occurs when there is a shortage for a product that is in demand. Our TradersTrade.com sister site reports that there are over 5,000 listings for TMX Elmo on eBay. The prices on eBay are two or three times the toy's list price of $39.99. Many of the entries list multiple Elmos sold in unsealed cases. You probably don't want 5, 10 or 20 TMX Elmos but it might be a way to get TMX Elmo for less if you go in on the order with friends or coworkers.

Princess Remains Top Halloween Costume
A study conducted for The National Retail Federation's (NRF) by BIGresearch has found that the princess is by far the most popular Halloween costume for kids for the second year in a row. 11.5% of kids surveyed said they planned to dress up as a princess. That figure doesn't include another 3.1% of children who plan to dress up as a Disney princess. Other popular costume choices include pirates, witches and Spider-Man. Those are Ariel and Spider-Man costumes in the photograph. They are sold in Lillian Vernon's Halloween store. The NRF study also found that more people are buying costumes this year.
"When it comes to dressing for Halloween, traditional costumes never go out of style," said Tracy Mullin, NRF President and CEO. "In order to please consumers of all ages, retailers have begun stocking their shelves with a wide variety of costumes, from classic favorites to pop-culture icons."
According to the survey, 59.9 percent of consumers plan to buy a Halloween costume this year, up from 53.3 percent in 2005, with the average person spending $21.57 on that purchase. This year an estimated $4.96 billion will be spent on the holiday, making it the sixth largest spending holiday of the year.
Here is the list of the top costumes for 2006.
| 1. | Princess | 11.5% |
| 2. | Pirate | 5.0% |
| 3. | Witch | 4.8% |
| 4. | Spider-Man | 4.4% |

Celebrity Fatigue Cited as Reason for Zeta-Jones T-Mobile Firing
Catherine Zeta-Jones fans are furious
that the star's contract with T-Mobile will not be renewed when it ends this month. The reason? Studies show that consumers are sick to death of celebrity spokespeople. Major firms such as Louis Vuitton are also dumping the celebrity spokesmodel idea and going back to models for their upcoming ads. Angelina Jolie's ads for St. John Knits have not helped sales of the troubled line and the Sarah Jessica Parker ads for the Gap were widely rated in focus groups as "annoying."
The imminent demise of one of the most heavily plugged advertising campaigns on US television has sparked vigorous internet exchanges between Zeta-Jones's fans and industry insiders who questioned the effectiveness of any celebrity in boosting company profits.
Her departure will follow a series of advertising fiascos involving prominent Hollywood actresses featured in multi-million-dollar campaigns that were widely deemed to have flopped. Angelina Jolie and Sarah Jessica Parker were in recent clothing promotions that attracted more criticism than customers.
"When you first saw [famous] names in advertisements and on magazine covers it was novel," said one advertising agency executive. "But it's become so ubiquitous it's one big bore."
As the perky, glamorous spokeswoman who popped up in every T-Mobile ad, Zeta-Jones became one of Hollywood’s wealthiest actresses. According to Advertising Age magazine, she has earned $20m (£11m) from T-Mobile, Elizabeth Arden and other endorsements.
*****
Yet the public's seemingly insatiable appetite for celebrity images - fuelled by tabloid magazines and the spread of the internet - encouraged advertisers to dangle huge contracts in front of the Hollywood A-list.
Gwyneth Paltrow was signed by Estée Lauder, Nicole Kidman starred in what was billed as the most expensive TV advertisement in history - a two-minute plug for Chanel No 5 perfume costing a reported $43m - and Charlize Theron became a spokeswoman for Christian Dior.
The celebrity age appears far from over - L'Oréal has just added Diane Keaton to a line-up that includes Penelope Cruz and Scarlett Johansson - but there is evidence that the tide is turning. Louis Vuitton, the luxury luggage manufacturer, recently returned to professional models after using actresses such as Jennifer Lopez and Uma Thurman.
Jolie earned a reported $12m from St John Knits, a US women's clothing brand, but her campaign ran into flak when the company's customers - conservative, wealthy, middle-aged women - rebelled at attempts to reinvent the brand for a younger, trendier market. An expensive campaign for the Gap fashion chain featured Parker, star of Sex and the City, but was found to be "annoying" potential customers, according to market researchers.
"Ten years ago, having a celebrity in your ad would class it up," Robert Thompson of Syracuse University told The Wall Street Journal. "Now there’s something cheesy about it . . . there are so many celebrities on so many magazines all the time."
Jonah Bloom, editor of Advertising Age, noted last week that advertisers willing to spend millions of dollars promoting their products rarely did so without careful scrutiny of the performance of their campaigns.
"If you see them repeating those ads, they are working," said Bloom. "But do I think that in this day and age a celebrity endorsement is the most effective means of marketing and advertising? Absolutely not. People don't hold these icons in such high regard any more."
We think the problems that St. John and the Gap are having are a direct result of the hideous clothes both companies have produced in the last couple of years, not as a result of the face of the models in the campaigns. But the reality is that people didn't use to buy Gap clothes because of the spokesperson, they bought clothes at the Gap because the Gap sold cute clothes. They don't any more. And that Audrey Hepburn commercial is nothing less than a travesty.
As for St. John, if they don't get Marie Gray back on board full time, the line is dead as a doornail. St. John knits are worn by wealthy businesswomen, politicians, and socialites -- especially those who travel. Shying away from the core designs has nearly destroyed the company. Let's hope they can pull it back together fast. And we think Angelina Jolie looks absolutely lovely in the ads.

Uncle Karl Wows Paris
Karl Lagerfeld wowed Paris with his breathtakingly lovely collection for Spring/Summer 2007. His palette was mostly black and white, with some navy blue.
He showed lots of super short smock dresses, some of which were more runway-friendly than couture-buyer friendly. But other than those few, the rest of the collection was quite chic and yet still wearable. The black pleated chiffon dress series was breathaking. The models wore black lace hose and either black shiny flats or black platform shoes with bows tied at the ankles.
The white dresses were shown with white lace hose and either chunky white platform heels or white flats with pointed toes.
The models all wore wigs with heavy bangs, done in asymetrical bobs. The eyes were totally Elizabeth Taylor in Cleopatra, with very heavy, exaggerated eyeliner. Accessories were large, faux bijoux and lace half-gloves -- yes, it appears that the modified, fingerless glove thing is about to make a big comeback if Uncle Karl has anything to say about it. The man is a genius with clothes and he's allowed his little touches of cultural whimsy.

Men Just as Likely to be Shopaholics as Women
A new study by Stanford University reveals that men are just as likely to be shopaholics as women are. But if they have a serious shopping problem, they are much less likely to get help for it than women are.
The random telephone survey of 2,514 adults found that 5.5 percent of men and 6 percent of women are addicted to shopping -- so obsessed that they may go deep into debt, wind up divorced or even consider suicide.
These aren't your average folks who enjoy an occasional day at the mall. The problem must be so severe that the sufferer is in financial or personal turmoil and has problems functioning.
*****
Shopaholics, the researchers found, tend to be young and live in homes with annual incomes less than $50,000. They're also about four times less likely than the average consumer to pay off their credit card balances in full.
"The behavior creates stress in the form of guilt or remorse, or dysfunction in the form of family conflict or unapproved time away from work to shop," said Lorrin Koran, lead author of the study and an emeritus professor of psychiatry at Stanford. The research appears in October's American Journal of Psychiatry.
While men and women may be afflicted to the same degree, they do differ in one area, Koran said.
Previous research has shown that men are much more likely to be obsessed with tools, electronic gadgets, books and CDs. (One of Koran's patients just had to have 2,000 wrenches, while another purchased 50 cameras that he didn't use.) Women overspend on clothes, jewelry, makeup, craft paraphernalia and items for the home.
"Men are going to Fry's," he said, "and women are going to Macy's."

Keibler and Other Celebs Auction Ducks for Charity
Munchkin, a manufacturer of baby products, has created a limited edition pink bath duck to be sold on eBay. 100% of the proceeds from the auction of celebrity-decorated ducks will benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Several of the ducks were first designed by celebrities. The first round of celebrity designed ducks were designed by Meg Whitman, Barbara Bush and Stacey Keibler. These auctions end on October 10th. Ducks created by Emmy Award winner Allison Janney; Grammy Award winner Patti LaBelle; Academy Award winner Reese Witherspoon; Golden Globe winner Martin Sheen; Nancy O'Dell ("Access Hollywood") and Cheryl Hines ("Curb Your Enthusiasm") will also be auctioned off this month.
You can see the auction page here. Stacy Keibler's duck has a top bid of $251. Former First Lady Barbara Bush's duck has a top bid of $760 and eBay CEO Meg Whitman's duck is going for $202.50. It looks like the duck designed by the former First Lady will end up going for the highest bid.
Update 10-10-07: Details about the 2007 Munchkin pink duck auction have been posted here.

Foundation Compacts That Make Us Smile
Finally, after years of enduring those "cream to powder" makeup foundation compacts, there are some really good products on the market for those of us who like our makeup and our powder to be separate products.
The Chanel Vitalumiere Satin Smoothing Creme Compact gives light to medium coverage. The creamy foundation is applied with a makeup sponge. It has SPF 15 and loads of antioxidants. It's non-comedogenic, so it shouldn't make your face break out. But if you have really oily skin, this one's going to be too creamy for you -- you're better off with one that dries to powder. We like the compact with a generously sized mirror, and the fact that the makeup stays on for hours. Chanel foundations just make our skin look smoother, we don't really know why. The makeup doesn't settle into fine wrinkles, either. It retails for $55 at Chanel.com or at Sephora.com.
A new product from Revlon is the first inexpensive makeup that we've seen that even comes close to Chanel's. This compact is called Age Defying Makeup and Concealer Compact With Botafirm (has anyone else noticed that the names of makeup products are getting longer and longer?). The Revlon product gives you concealer in a lighter color, and cream foundation in a slightly darker shade. It also provides light to medium coverage. It's oil-free, and it really does reduce the appearnce of fine lines. It features an SPF of 20 and comes in eight shades. It retails for around $12 at Drugstore.com or at Target.
Cream compact foundation works best for women who are away from home all day, and who like to touch up their makeup during the day. Especially during hot weather, it's nice to be able to do a touch up in about five seconds flat.

PhishTank Tracks Phising Sites
PhishTank, a user generated database of known phishing sites, has launched. PhishTank allows people to submit phishes and track the status of their submissions. People can also verify the submissions made by others. Developers can also create software and mashups using the PhishTank API. PhishTank announced the launch in a post from the PhishTank blog. The post includes a description of how annoying and frustrating phising can be.
Phishing scams aim to trick innocent, unsuspecting people into thinking something bad has happened, or may happen, if they don't willingly hand over sensitive information powerful enough to devastate their finances. And if that doesn't frustrate you, consider this: over the past three years, phishing has become a multi-million dollar industry, profiting off fear and false trust.
Taking on phishing is no small task. And it's certainly something we can't do alone. The only way this site will work is if you submit suspected phishing sites, and tell your friends and family to do the same. And when you have some time to spare, stop by and verify some phishes for the community. We think you'll do all of this, because we believe you want to end phishing, too. Supporting PhishTank doesn't just help OpenDNS, it allows any developer building an application to incorporate anti-phishing data into their tools.
You can see an archive and a graph of the phishes submitted and verified at PhishTank. There is also a faq. PhishTank is a good idea and should help with the identification of many more phishing sites.

Aquamarine's Starfish Earrings
If you missed it on the big screen, you simply must catch the absolutely adorable kids/tweens film, Aquamarine on DVD. The lighthearted comedy is about two young girls, Claire (Emma Roberts) and Hailey (Joanna 'JoJo' Levesque) who are best friends. Hailey is about to move to Australia because her mom's job as a marine biologist requires them to move. The girls are devastated, and when a big storm lands a real-life mermaid named Aquamarine (Sara Paxton) in a nearby pool, they decide to help Aquamarine find true love with a local cute boy in three days so she won't have to marry some boring mer-man. (Work with us here, it's fantasy, for pete's sake.) Anyone who helps a mermaid gets a free wish, and the girls will wish for Hailey not to have to move. It gets considerably more complicated from there one, but you get the idea. The movie is based on the critically praised book by Alice Hoffman, Aquamarine.
Aquamarine is a fish out of water, who is learning the ropes of walking on two legs. The entire film is worth renting for this one scene where Aquamarine gathers two starfish to be her earrings. Starfish, she tells the girls "are notorious suck-ups." But they make great earrings because they constantly whisper supportive messages of encouragement into the wearer's ears, like "Aquamarine is sooooo fabulous!! She's beautful and smart and funny and eeeeeeveryoooone looooves her!!" We nearly passed out with excitement over the Supportive Starfish Earrings scene. (Ok, maybe it was the martinis we were sipping, but it was truly moving). Who wouldn't want earrings that whispered sweet supportive messages into your ears all day long? It's kind of like having Oprah on call.
Alas, the real starfish earring require a mermaid and the existence of magic to make them work. But we found these cute substitutes from designer Elsa Peretti at Tiffany's. The 18k gold and diamond starfish earrings feature round brilliant diamonds. They retail for $2,200. If your starfish earring budget is limited, you could always go for the more casual mini mini starfish earrings in sterling silver. They retail for $250 at Tiffany.com. Now, if only we could get them to talk.....
