George Clooney is the Omega Inspector
Omega has been battling Rolex for so long now. When an Omega watch was worn by James Bond (instead of the Rolex that the spy wore in the original books by Ian Fleming), it was considered a great marketing coup by the company. Now the company has decided that George Clooney is the epitome of masculine style -- which he is, of course.
In this photo George Clooney learns how to create an Omega timepiece, with the help of an actual watchmaker at the Nicolas G. Hayek Center in Tokyo on Sunday. No doubt after this intense learning session, George is now able to create his own luxury timepieces whenever he wants.

A Portable DVD Player That Won't Break the Budget
We simply can't get along on trips without our portable DVD player. But the kind of player you might buy for yourself on a long European flight and the kind you would buy to keep your kids entertained in the back of the SUV, on a plane or in a waiting room might be two different things. For one thing, the really high-end DVD players are very expensive, and some of them aren't that durable. We had the opportunity to test drive Best Buy's Insignia 10.2" 16:9 Widescreen LCD Portable DVD Player, which retails for under $200 -- as of today, it's on sale for only $189.99 at Best Buy.
This DVD player has a cool-looking rubberized shell that makes it more durable if it's dropped. It also has a swivel screen, 3 headphone jacks so up to three people can watch a movie together and very easy to use controls. A responsible 6 year-old could operate the DVD player. The rechargeable lithium-ion battery that comes with the DVD player will last up to 4 hours of playback time, but we always buy an extra battery for trips. Included in the box are an A/V cable, car power adapter, AC/DC adapter and remote. The player weighs 2.6 lbs and will play the following media: DVD, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW, CD, CD-R, CD-RW, MP3 and JPEG. The picture was clear, the sound was great with our own noise-canceling headphones and we absolutely love the widescreen.
This is a good, inexpensive unit that would be perfect for a student heading off to college, family trips or as a treat for yourself to use when your significant other simply refuses to watch your new DVD sets of Desperate Housewives and Boston Legal.

Potty Training For Boys Made Easy
Ah, the trials and tribulations of potty training! But when successful potty training has been achieved, what a glorious day it is for all adults. Usually when one trains a little boy, one finds a stepstool so that the little darling can make his way to the toilet bowl and proceed with his business. But a new study which involved 400 children says that teaching little boys to tinkle while standing up from the getgo results in much faster potty training. Enter the Peter Potty, a mini-urinal that little boys can use without a stepstool and without sitting down.
"Potty training can be one of the most challenging milestones for
parents in their child's development. Allowing boys to stand can
significantly reduce this frustration by providing boys with a relaxed,
easy method for success." stated Dr. Julius Goepp, a pediatrician with
Pediatric Planet in Rochester.
"It is common today to wait until a child 'opts-in' to start training. The research shows that boys are more
receptive to starting when given an opportunity to stand," stated Scott
Rote, Vice President of Visionaire Products, Inc., a manufacturer of potty
training products. In addition, the research shows that boys who train with
this method take less time to reach success then boys who sit.
The research said that when little boys train while standing up they can more easily copy a behavior as the adult shows them what to do. The makers of the Peter Potty say that this device can speed up potty training in boys by 6 - 15 months, which will save in diaper costs. The Potty Toddler Urinal, which sounds like a wonderful idea to us, can be found at PeterPotty.com.
The day when potty training has been accomplished is a glorious day.

Kevin Bacon Gets the Sixth Degree
You remember the "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon" game, in which any actor can be connected to Kevin Bacon within six steps? Kevin Bacon was a good sport about the game, and founded a charity called SixDegrees.org. Six Degrees and Hanes got together to create a T-short to support the charity. Up to $10,000 will be
awarded to the causes of the six people most successful at connecting with friends and family to raise funds for their favorite charities. The official SixDegrees.org T-shirt from Hanes, made from ultrasoft cotton, is available for purchase for $20 at Hanes.com and SixDegrees.org.
From the official release:
SixDegrees.org, which was created in partnership with the nonprofit, Network for Good, launched at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2007 to bring a social conscience to social networking. The Web site spotlights 50 celebrities' causes and allows noncelebrities to donate to or raise funds for their own favorite charities. Celebrities involved in the site include Kyra Sedgwick (Natural Resources Defense Council), Nicole Kidman (UNIFEM), Ashley Judd (YouthAIDS), Tyra Banks (TZONE Foundation), Kanye West (Kanye West Foundation), Rosie O'Donnell (Rosie's For All Kids Foundation), and Jessica Simpson (Operation Smile). The site features an auction of celebrity-signed items to benefit charity.
"We started with a group of my celebrity friends in January, but the real celebrities with a cause have turned out to be people who aren't from Hollywood," said Bacon. "In our first six months, for every celebrity involved, we've had 100 noncelebrities join, and this community has raised nearly $700,000 for thousands of charities with their badges. It goes to show that when we connect with others, our degrees of separation become smaller, and the world becomes a whole lot better."
Visitors to SixDegrees.org are encouraged to create charity badges, which are fundraising widgets that people can design themselves to raise money for any of more than 1.5 million charities and place anywhere online - including blogs, Web sites and social networks. The six people who receive the most number of donations from different people through their badge from July 19 to Sept. 16 will receive up to $10,000 in matching funds for their charity, and anyone who receives at least six donations through their badge will receive the official SixDegrees.org T-shirt from Hanes.
Kevin Bacon has been in so many movies over the years, it's mind-boggling. And now we hear that they're re-making Footloose. We feel the Shia LaBeouf buzz already starting for that one.... and it really scares us.

The Bolder Eyebrow is Here
ABC News delves into the subject of eyebrow width. Ever since Sienna Miller appeared at Valentino's post haute couture show gala with very heavy, dark eyebrows, the eyebrow discussions are reaching a fever pitch. The nineties were a decade of skinny, stripper eyebrows, but lately models have been sporting a heavier brow which is reminiscent of the Brooke Shields look in the 1980s.
In Western celebrity culture we can trace the ebb and flow of the eyebrow. In the 1940s and 50s, female movie stars often removed their eyebrows completely.
"Eyebrows, any body hair, anything suggestive of masculinity had to be immediately erased," explained Zoe Williams, a zeitgeist columnist with The Guardian newspaper. "There was a real interest in ramming home the difference between the genders."
Why? Was it a conscious effort to redefine femininity after the austerity of the war years? Who knows. But check out Ronald Coleman's slugs and Marlene Dietrich's sliver in Kismet, and you're left in no doubt who's man, who's women and the gulf between.
"Then in the 60s, everything got a lot more androgynous," continued Williams. Hair grew everywhere for years. It sprouted all over men and women. The bushy brow's zenith was reached on Brooke Shields' face in The Blue Lagoon.
Society's evolution can be traced through the eyebrow. In the 80s eyebrows thinned again, reflecting the self-obsession and greed of the age. Power suits, shoulder pads, enormous cell phones and scary, mean, thin eyebrows. Watch Wall Street. You'll see. Women were groomed to within an inch of their lives.
We think the shape of Sienna's brows was fine; it was the color that was horrible. It was too dark for her blond hair and fair skin. We absolutely despise skinny, skanky stripper brows. Bring on the bolder brows, we say!
You can see an interesting look at eyebrow shapes over the years here.

Branica.com Launches Search Engine for Misspelled eBay Auctions
Branica has launched a search tool dedicated to helping eBay buyers find misspelled auction listings. Branica claims buyers can find savings of up to 80% off by using the misspellings.
With the new Misspelled Auction Search service, users simply enter the correct spelling of a product that they want to buy, select the "Get Misspellings" checkbox, and click on the "Submit Query" button. The service will automatically bring up current eBay auctions with both the correct and incorrect spellings so that users can find the auction that is right for them. To place a bid, users must sign up for an account at eBay.com.
"We offer a unique way to shop at for auctions so you can make an educated purchase" says Arthur Lee, owner of Branica.com. "Typically you can expect to see savings of up to 80% off the usual auction price with misspellings."
You can find the misspelled auctions search box here. The search results provide both the normal auctions and the misspelled auctions. As an example here on the results for a Tennessee seach -- a word that is often misspelled on eBay.

The Burqini Hits the Beach
Time magazine has an article about the hot new swimwear for Muslim women: the burqini. The burqini is a lightweight swim garment that covers women from head to toe. It's been a big hit with Muslim women, but the makers of the swimwear have been surprised to find that burn victims, women who can't be in the sun because of medical reasons, older women and others have really taken to the suits.
Since the full-coverage swimsuit dubbed the Burqini (as in burqa plus bikini) hit the international market in January, devout Muslim women have been snapping them up. The polyester suits were designed to accord with Islamic laws that require women to dress modestly and to eliminate the risk of drowning when the yards of fabric used in traditional burqas get soaked. Now, however, non-Muslim beachgoers are getting into the full-covered swim. Whether women are worried about health, weight or the tolls of age, the Burqini offers a comfortable alternative to a skimpy two-piece or clingy maillot.
The demure suits, pioneered by two Muslim women on opposite sides of the globe, are like lightweight, loose, hooded wet suits and hide everything but the face, hands and feet. Australian retailer Aheda Zanetti, 38, says she was inspired to design her Burqini after watching young Muslim girls struggle to play netball in bulky layers. Her competitor, California microbiologist Shereen Sabet, 36, came up with her full-coverage Splashgear suits after searching in vain for Islam-appropriate scuba gear. The UV-resistant, stretchy swimsuits start at $90 and have found upwards of 6,000 buyers--most of them online--in locations as varied as Malaysia, South Africa, Mexico, Ireland and the U.S. "I'm a very small business with a product the whole world wants," says Zanetti.
We're not big on the whole "veiling women for modesty thing," as you know. But it appears that this swimwear has value for many types of women. One anecdote discussed an elderly woman who can swim again because the burqini keeps her warm. Certainly it's the perfect outfit if you don't want any men looking at your -- or your preteeen's bum -- this would do the trick. Although getting an American preteen into one of these suits would require some kind of miracle. But if you've fallen off your diet in the Fat Abyss of Doom, well this is clearly the bathing suit of choice.

Sesame Street Comes to J.C. Penney Portrait Studios
J.C. Penney has a fun new concept at its JCPenney Portraits locations: as of this week, kids can pose on the Sesame Street stoop next to Elmo, his new friend and fairy-in-training Abby Cadabby (coming in August), or several other Sesame Street options.
"We are so excited that, for the first time in decades, fans of Sesame Street will have an opportunity to take professional portraits with their favorite characters," said Maura Regan, Vice President and General Manager of Global Licensing, Sesame Workshop, the non-profit educational organization behind Sesame Street. "We are thrilled to build upon our relationship with JCPenney, one of America's most well-known department stores, and to give children even more reasons to smile and laugh."
The concept is really cute. And maybe -- just maybe -- little Johnny will actually smile in his portrait for once if Elmo is next to him. A portrait without a scowl or tears, what a concept. You can see the portrait samples and get coupons, at jcpportraits.com.

Global Warming and the Tieless Romans
A blistering heat wave is affecting fashion in Italy. The heat has gotten so bad -- it's 100 degrees in Florence, of all places -- that the Ministry of Health has asked businesses in Rome to switch to a no-tie policy.
Health officials are urging fashion-conscious Italians to beat the heat by taking off their ties.
Amid an unforgiving heat wave, the Health Ministry is advising employers to let male workers in loosen their ties.
"Taking off the tie produces an immediate decrease in the body temperature, by about 2 or 3 degrees Celsius degrees (4 to 5 degrees Fahrenheit)," health officials said in a news release.
Temperatures registered Tuesday at 39 degrees Celsius (102 Fahrenheit) in the northern city of Ferrara, and at 38 Celsius (100 Fahrenheit) in cities such as Florence and Bologna, with hot winds and high humidity gripping most of the country.
Forecasters say the temperatures will stay the same in coming days, and electricity demand is soaring.
A no-tie policy would lower demands for electricity by reducing the need for air conditioning, health officials noted.
"It is a small gesture that costs nothing but which can help people better tolerate the exceptional heat of this period," it said.
Reaction to the no-tie policy has reportedly been mixed. The Romans are very fashion-conscious. Some large corporations are going along with the suggestion, but others are unhappy that Roman businessmen will now look untidy. It's a sad day for tie-makers, that's for sure.

Ebay Listing Offers Iraq War Solution
An eBay entry (via AFP) claims to offer the solution to the Iraq War. The auction was put there by someone claiming to be a Military Intelligence officer in the United States Army with an extensive background in the Middle East. Here is what the auction listing's description says.
I am offering the winning bidder the solution to the war in Iraq. This is not a flippant or facetious offer. There will be no joke forwarded to you if you are the winning bidder. If you are the high bidder, I will send you a viable solution to the conflict in which we are currently engaged. I am a Military Intelligence officer in the United States Army with an extensive background in the Middle East. I speak the language and understand the culture, history, and religion, well enough to construct a fair, honorable, and successful plan. I have spent time in Iraq as an enlisted intelligence Soldier during Desert Storm in 1991 and as an intelligence officer during this latest action.
I have been involved in the planning of over 400 combat operations and have personally participated in over 300 combat operations that ranged from terrorist cell take-downs to single-handed arms market raids. I do not lack courage or the ability to act.
I have headed humanitarian efforts that varied from toy drives to bridge building to educational support. I do not lack heart or the ability to feel.
My passion for this solution is genuine and my zeal is not misdirected. I do not demonize any group for the actions of a few but neither do I deify any group in some misguided attempt to show my open-mindedness. I have grieved for lost friends, both American and Iraqi, military and civilian. This war is not a concept, a philosophy, or a political agenda to me. It is a highly personal issue that I have applied an objective detachment to in order to arrive at a logical conclusion.
This war has currently cost us somewhere around FOUR HUNDRED BILLION DOLLARS and over 3500 American lives. My buy it now price of five million seems perfectly reasonable by comparison. I'm not even asking you to risk your life. Unfortunately, sometimes it seems that the most valuable things in life are the least valued. For this reason I am starting the bidding at only one dollar. Just to sweeten the pot a little, I will not only send you the solution but I will also make myself available to you for two hours to further explain my solution and answer any possible questions that you may have. (Transportation costs are the sole responsibility of the winning bidder if they choose to exercise this option.) If you work for a senator or congressman or a possible presidential hopeful, maybe you should get everyone at the office to chip in and purchase my solution for them. Some of them might even be able to foot the bill themselves.
The highest bid for the item has passed the $1,000 mark. There have been 54 bids so far.

Posh and Becks Arrive in America
They finally arrived: Victoria and David Beckham set foot in Los Angeles this past week and David was formally introduced to fans of his new soccer team, the L.A. Galaxy. The couple already has a mansion, two new cars (a monogrammed Bentley for her and a Cadillac Esplinade for him), bodyguards, and schools lined up for their three boys, Cruz, Romeo and Brooklyn. They also have a sexy new photo shoot for W magazine which has an interesting interview with the couple. Victoria jokes about about being the funny one while her husband is the handsome one. She also talks about trying to smile more for an American audience that expects it.
And while David wants to change the American opinion of professional soccer, Victoria, 33, seems determined to change the American opinion of her. "I think people are really going to see me for the first time," she says. "I think they have this impression that I'm this miserable cow who doesn't smile. But I'm actually quite the opposite.
"When you're out there, they're trying to get pictures up your shirt, down your top," she continues, in explanation of her tendency to scowl in paparazzi shots. "With all the flashes, it's as much as you can do to just find your car. I'm going to try and smile more for America."
*****
As of this fall, the Beckham style will be widely available in America. Victoria's denim line and collection of sunglasses-both under her dVb label-will be sold at Saks Fifth Avenue, Henri Bendel and other upscale stores. (Intimately Beckham, a fragrance in both men's and women's versions, will be in department stores.) For Victoria, an admitted shopaholic, it's a major triumph to be sold in such retail temples. "Being a Spice Girl opened a lot of doors, but it also shut many because of preconceptions people have about me," she says. "I've had to bang down those doors."
Victoria insists that-unlike some celebs with namesake labels-she was very much involved, even traveling to the factory in Winnipeg, Manitoba, to supervise the production of her jeans. "I'm a real consumer, and I think I know how real women want to look," she says. She even had her new friend Jennifer Lopez road test a pair to make sure they suited curvier girls.
Victoria scored a fashion coup at the L.A. Galaxy bash to introduce David to fans. She wore a fabulous pink Robert Mouret Moon Dress with a matching pink ostrich Hermes Birkin bag, with Balenciaga court shoes and large black sunglasses. She smiled and even giggled during part of the festivities, which made her seem more friendly and approachable.
Coveted by the likes of Nicole Richie, Sienna Miller and Nicole Kidman, the £990 origami-folded stretch cotton frock has been designed by Roland Mouret, whose Galaxy Dress became the hottest item of 2005.
Posh posed for photographers at the team's ground in Carson, California, on Friday with a £10,000 Barbie- pink ostrich-skin Hermes Birkin bag on her arm, Balenciaga court shoes and her trademark oversized sunglasses.
Having worn the dress long before it goes on sale in November - and in the pink limited edition which will be sold only in upmarket New York department store Bergdorf Goodman - Posh is sure to have made shoppers from Sloane Street to Sunset Boulevard green with envy.
It is, to use her husband's terminology, a gloriously executed goal against the fashion opposition. And to guarantee she's one step ahead of every other red carpet hopeful, Posh has put her name down for all 21 items in Mouret's new collection - an order worth more than £30,000.
Welcome to L.A.! But beware of anti-depressant and psychiatrist-hating movie stars bearing gifts. Seriously, Posh. You have been warned.

Eva's Swag Bags Thrill Guests
Eva Longoria's wedding went off without a hitch. Reportedly, the food was great and the members of the wedding party especially loved their fabulous swag bags. The female guests at the wedding all received Van Cleef & Arpels' Sweet Alhambra bracelets, which are 18K yellow gold chains on which hangs a mother-of-pearl clover charm. The bracelets are supposed to bring good luck Page Six reports that smart Eva got everything in the swag bag donated by various companies.
Eva Longoria and Tony Parker pimped out their "special day" to OK! magazine for $2 million, but they didn't have to pay for the goodies their wedding guests received. Those invited to the insanely over-covered nuptials got $700 bracelets from French jeweler Van Cleef & Arpels, along with Bebe bags filled Vitamin Water, L'Oreal products for women and a Cole Haan kit for men. At least the lovebirds paid for their wedding rings and luxurious gifts for each other, but, "They didn't purchase anything for their guests," said our insider.
Even the tacky "Mrs. Parker" track suit Longoria sported before hopping on her honeymoon plane was a gift from Bebe, the fashion company she endorses. And with the press snapping the happy couple at every moment, swag-givers got plenty of press. Reps for Longoria, who's now on her honeymoon in Turks & Caicos, would not confirm or deny details of the event to Page Six.
The couple spent a fortune with Van Cleef & Arpels for their wedding rings and Tony's blinged out watch (a present from Eva), so no doubt the famous jeweler sweetened the deal by offering the bracelets. Why shouldn't she get things donated? It's not like she pulled a Star Jones and shouted it to the world, or anything. We will admit that we hated the "Mrs. Parker" tracksuit. Still, it was better than the Britney Spears wedding track suits which said "Pimp." Or was it Ho? We can't recall.

Alli is Here: Dieters Beware
Alli, the over the counter version of the prescription weight loss drug, Orlistat, is on drugstore shelves now. You know the drug - this is the one that keeps you from absorbing a percentage of the fat calories you eat. So, what's the catch? Well, if you actually eat a bunch of high-fat foods while on Alli, you have the most horrifying gastrointestinal side effects we've ever heard of for a diet pill. There's just no polite way to say this; you'll have uncontrollable diarrhea all day long. And leakage, too! What more could a girl ask for in a diet drug?
Sometimes, you can't stop your weight-loss secrets from leaking out.
Dieters have been flocking to drugstores to pick up Alli, the first over-the-counter weight-loss pill to be approved by the Food and Drug Administration, despite the scary warning: Stray too far from your low-fat diet and you just might poop your pants.
The drug's maker, GlaxoSmithKline, has been up front about the pill's side effects, suggesting that first timers wear dark pants or bring a change of clothes to work until they get used to the diet pill's potentially yucky consequences.
*****
The diet pill works by blocking 25 percent of fat from being digested. Alli users take one pill with every meal, and to avoid an "Alli oops," they should eat less than 42 grams of fat a day, or about 15 grams per meal. But those fat grams can be sneaky. One grande Starbucks Caramel Frappuccino contains 15 grams of fat, and if an Alli user adds even a low-fat muffin to that meal, it could get icky.
"It's so important to understand that you must adopt a low-fat, healthy lifestyle," Jones says. "We call them treatment effects — that's a signal for you that you're not staying in the guidelines. What Alli will not do is make up for not living a healthy lifestyle."
An "Alli oops"? How cute! If you must indulge, you can find Alli for about $50 at Amazon.com. Alas, Amazon states that "gift wrapping is not available for this item." And we were all set to give Alli to all our friends for Christmas. It's the perfect way to say "hey, you look like hell. Maybe this will help. But watch out for the Alli-oops!"

High-Tech is the Hot Home Trend
The trend in new homes is to have the latest technology throughout the house. Hot technology can be pricey and it can require a great deal of space. For example, a home theatre with comfy seating and a giant 75-inch plasma television probably won't work in a small home. An article in the Orlando Sentinel lists some of the other high-tech trends including: advanced lighting with whole-house lighting controls, whole-house automation, music-player docking, induction cooktops and two-in-one washer/dryers.
"In the homes of the future, it's all going to be about technology," says Gopal Ahluwalia of the National Association of Home Builders in Washington, D.C.
He stresses that high-tech items mostly are being installed in upscale housing today. While the buyer of an average-size house doesn't want to spend more than 3 percent to 4 percent of the purchase price on technology, purchasers of million-dollar homes don't worry about tech costs, Ahluwalia says.
House size is a determining factor. "In a small house, there's no room for a separate media room with a 64-inch TV," he says.
One reason for the increased popularity of technology in the future will be its acceptance by younger homeowners -- Generations X and Y, born after 1965, Ahluwalia says. They are more at ease with technology and have more use for it, he says.
Homeowners are certainly ready for high-tech homes. The popularity of tech gadgets like the iPod, iPhone, Wii and BlackBerry shows that people are willing to embrace exciting new technologies. However, people are going to be much more demanding that the technology really works if it is being installed in their homes. If you are new to some of the home technologies available this section on Electronic House magazine's website gives you an idea of some of the high-tech home features available. Realtor.org offers a field guide to high-tech homes. Forbes also has an article featuring seven high-tech homes.

Eva and Tony Choose Piaget Possession Wedding Bands
Eva Longoria and Tony Parker tied the knot twice in France this past weekend: once in a civil ceremony and once in a French cathedral, Saint
Germain L'Auxerrois, where French kings used to marry. The wedding bands the couple chose were the Possession bands by Piaget.
According to Piaget, Eva's wedding band is made of 18K white gold and
features two rows of 80 brilliant-cut diamonds, separated by a row of 27
square-cut diamonds-a total of 107 jewels. Tony's is a
matching 18K white gold Possession band. The couple had the company
engrave a special inscription was engraved inside both
rings in French.
Piaget's president also described a special watch Eva had made for Tony for a wedding present:
Ms. Longoria, who with her stylist Robert Verdi, has had a longstanding
love affair with Piaget, also commissioned a one-of-a-kind timepiece as a
wedding gift for her MVP husband. "An extraordinary player deserves a truly
extraordinary watch," says Metzger. "This is the type of request we love at
Piaget because it's what we do best." Certain to become the most
sought-after watch by professional athletes around the world, the Piaget
'Number 9' is a specially customized version of the classic Piaget Polo
watch. It features a 43mm 18K white gold case and a makes a bold, handsome
statement with its slate grey 18K gold and titanium bezel and matching
slate grey dial. The 50 diamonds that form Mr. Parker's winning number 9
make it all his own.
Eva did a lovely job on the wedding rings: we love Piaget. We're not so sure about the watch -- it sounds a bit over the top. We were on board with the watch until they got to the part about spelling out Tony's number 9 with 50 diamonds. We find it quite interesting that Eva went with 18K white gold instead of platinum. Could the platinum trend be starting to wane?

Madonna Rocks Live Earth in Four Inch Louboutins
Madonna just finished rocking Wembley Stadium's Live Earth concert with a sizzling performance. She brought the entire crowd to its feet -- after demanding that they jump up and down to save the planet. And jump they did! She opened with her new song "Hey You" which is the anthem she wrote for Live Earth. Her backing vocals were provided by a children's choir. She then performed a smoking rendition of "Ray of Light" in which she played a black electric guitar. She was wearing a black dress with cap sleeves, black short leggings and four inch Christian Louboutin La Donna Mary Jane Pumps.
Madonna then segued into a gypsy rendition of "La Isla Bonita," all the while dancing in her Louboutins. She then finished up with an unbelievably electric version of "Hung Up." She was barely even breathing hard until after the last number, but her voice still sounded great.
You can buy the shoes at Neiman Marcus, but can you dance in them for 2 billion people? Alas, only the legendary Madonna can pull that feat off.
Live Earth has been an amazing series of concerts today. You can learn more about the biggest rock concert the Earth has ever seen and see on-demand videos of the performances you may have missed at LiveEarth.org.

Febreze's New Candles
We've been using Febreze Allergen Reducer spray ever since we saw a bottle of it in our veterinarian's office. This stuff is the greatest for helping get pet allergens off fabrics and reducing allergens in the air. Given happiness with our first Febreze product, we were more than happy to try out something new.
Febreze is expanding its product line: this month it's introducing a line of odor-eliminating candles. The candles come is six scents: Meadows & Rain, Linen & Sky, Apple Spice & Delight, Spring & Renewal, and Vanilla & Refresh. They come in a minimalist glass container that we like. Each candle has a scented candle wrapped around a core candle that eliminates odors. The candles aren't overpowering -- you know how we hate that -- and really seemed to work quickly to eliminate the smell of a cooking disaster (hey, it happens).
Each candle has 30 hours of burn time and retails for under $8. They are available at all major grocery retailers. If you like Febreze products, they have a lot of coupons and special offers on the website.

FAO Schwarz Opens Styled By Me Barbie Boutique: Whining By Tweens Already Starting
FAO Schwarz has just opened a paradise for Barbie doll lovers. The new 1500 square foot retail experience is called Styled By Me Barbie Doll and it's located at the toy store's Fifth Avenue location in New York City. So what happens inside this Ode to Barbie? The official release tells all:
The moment they arrive, girls of all ages will be captivated by two large Barbie doll styling stations, complete with eight interactive touch screens that guide girls through a step-by-step design process to personally select a doll, fashions, accessories, a doll case and even a gift for themselves. The possibilities are nearly limitless as girls can choose from among seven Barbie dolls and friends featuring different skin tones and hair colors and styles, as well as from a "closet full" of runway and real world-inspired fashions and accessories to create highly-personalized Barbie dolls.
After styling out their Barbie dolls, girls can debut their newly styled doll in a mini "fashion show," in which each customized Barbie doll will appear from behind a screen, "walk" down the miniature working runway and, ultimately, strike a pose for her audience. Like any premier fashion show, two large screens on both sides of the runway announce each girl's newly styled Barbie doll using fun animations and music. Styled by Me Barbie dolls will be available for an average retail price starting at $65.
"Barbie has always been on the forefront of reflecting cultural and fashion trends, and today we combine fashion and technology for the first experience of its kind for girls," said Richard Dickson, Senior Vice President of Marketing, Media and Entertainment, Worldwide, Mattel. "With styled by me we've created an unparalleled retail experience based on the rich fashion heritage of the Barbie brand and the personalization and customization that today's girls love."
"For nearly 150 years, FAO Schwarz has provided families with memorable, enchanting shopping experiences, and we're thrilled to open the styled by me Barbie boutique, designed specifically for today’s generation of girls," said Ed Schmults, Chief Executive Officer, FAO Schwarz. Styled By Me is the ultimate celebration of our long-standing relationship with Mattel and Barbie and a prime example of our joint commitment to bring fresh, new ways to bring children's dreams to life."
Those sneaky marketers at Mattel -- now they've done it. We are going to have to head to Manhattan to see this. It's just too exciting an idea for a Barbie fan. The fashion show alone makes it worth it! And what do you want to bet that FAO Schwarz will -- for a small fee -- rent out the space for the best Barbie Birthday Bash Ever?? Bob Mackie better watch out, because we are ready to style a specialty Barbie that will make his Cher doll look like Plain Jane.

Fourth of July: Time to Shop
Did you know that the Fourth of
July is now becoming known as a shopping holiday?
Well, it is. A new consumer survey by the National Retail Federation revealed that plenty of people will get their shop on this holiday, although the fact that the holiday falls right in the middle of the week is putting a tiny damper on travel. Mostly, everyone is buying food for parties, holiday decorations, swimsuits and beachwear.
Good news for grocers: Food is one of the strongest-performing categories for Independence Day, according to Kathy Grannis, an NRF spokeswoman. More than 60 percent of consumers will have a cookout or barbecue, and Americans are expected to eat 150 million hot dogs for the holiday, according to the National Hot Dog & Sausage Council. Meanwhile, Florida accounted for 835 million pounds of watermelon produced last year.
*****
More than 17 percent of shoppers will have purchased patriotic merchandise (think flags, patches and pins). Swimsuit sales for Jacksonville retailer and mail order company Venus Swimwear peak during holidays like July 4. "While parts of the country can still be cold at spring break time, pretty much everywhere is hot and in summer mode by July 4," Venus founder Daryle Scott said. These past two weeks, sales have gone up nearly 25 percent, and the company is shipping 20,000 suits per week.
Travel is also popular this week. And there are lots of 4th of July sales this week, as well.
Whether you spend it shopping, traveling, or just hanging out with friends and family, have a safe and happy Fourth of July!

Healthy Summer Cooking
Now that the Atkins insanity is past us (until it bubbles up again under a new name in about ten years), we've been cooking healthy carbs again. So calming! So healthy! We've always been fond of homemade muffins, but let's face it -- some of those "healthy" muffins taste just ghastly. We've found that using applesauce to sweeten (along with a bit of real brown sugar) makes most recipes taste good, with less sugar.
A new product that we've been successfully experimenting with is Fiber-sure, which is a fiber supplement that you can add to food. The great thing about Fiber-sure is that it's not like psyllium, which swells up to like a gazillion times its original size when exposed to water. Fiber-sure is 100% natural inulin (a pure vegetable fiber), which is made from chicory root. It has no taste and you can add it to drinks, recipes or just regular foods. That way you get your fiber and you fill up much faster -- it makes a great addition to any weight-reduction diet.
Fibersure has a good
website, which has lots of recipes, including this one for
Low-fat Banana Bread.
A few notes for those who have never tried the high-fiber diet: 1) add fiber slowly to your diet if you're not used to it; 2) drink plenty of water and fluids with high fiber foods; and 3) lay off the fiber and eat lots of lean protein, veggies and water for 24-48 hours before a bikini-wearing event for the flattest tummy ever. Then after the party is over, go back on the fiber. This one really works.

An Injection to Make You Thin?
A new study links stress with obesity. The study has some pretty significant implications for the future of weight loss and the future of dermal fillers. If human trials go well, we could see an injection that will literally melt the fat away -- up to 40% of fat stores in two weeks.
In an elaborate series of experiments on mice, researchers showed that the neurochemical pathway they identified promotes fat growth in chronically stressed animals that eat the equivalent of a junk-food diet.
The international team also showed that blocking those signals can prevent fat accumulation and shrink fat deposits, while stimulating the pathway can strategically create new ones, possibly offering new ways to remove fat as well as to mold youthful faces, firmer buttocks and bigger breasts.
****
"There is a lot of uncontrollable stress right now in our societies. There's also a lot of inexpensive high-fat food," said Mary F. Dallman of the University of California, San Francisco, who co-wrote a commentary accompanying the research. "This could help explain the obesity epidemic."
*****
To explore this, Zukowska and her colleagues conducted a series of experiments in which they subjected mice to chronic stress -- either standing in cold water an hour a day or being caged with a more aggressive alpha mouse for 10 minutes a day -- and then gave them standard feed or a high-fat, high-sugar diet similar to the junk food fare many Americans consume.
After two weeks, only the mice that were both stressed and fed the junk-food diet gained a significant amount of weight, accumulating about twice as much fat in their bellies as non-stressed mice that consumed the same diet.
*****
When the researchers examined the animals' fat tissue, they discovered sharply elevated concentrations of a substance called neuropeptide Y (NPY), a chemical messenger produced by nerves in various parts of the body, including fat. They also had far higher levels of a molecular partner NPY needs to work, known as the neuropeptide Y2R receptor.
"This tells us that NPY and this receptor trigger the whole process of stress-induced obesity," said Zukowska, noting that other recent studies found that humans with defective NPY receptors are resistant to obesity, while those with excessive NPY are prone to it.
After confirming the role of NPY in fat formation in additional studies in genetically engineered mice, the researchers showed in laboratory experiments that NPY induces the growth of immature fat cells, coaxes mature fat cells to get bigger, and promotes blood vessels necessary to sustain fat tissue.
The researchers also demonstrated that injecting a substance that blocks NPY prevented mice from accumulating fat even if they were stressed and ate a high-fat diet, and could shrink fat deposits by 40 percent to 50 percent within two weeks.
"It just melts the fat. It's incredible," said Zukowska, noting that the technique could offer an alternative or supplement to liposuction.
On the flip side, when the researchers inserted pellets containing NPY under the skin of mice and three monkeys, they were able to stimulate fat growth, suggesting the approach could replace skin fillers and other cosmetic and reconstructive surgical techniques.
"This has tremendous potential applications for both cosmetic and reconstructive surgery," said Stephen B. Baker, a Georgetown professor of plastic surgery who helped conduct the research.
Detailed studies of the mice and preliminary findings from the monkeys found no signs of any adverse side effects.
We are remaining optimistic in the face of naysayers (the web team) who told us that this sounds like an episode of The 4400, where one returnee had the ability to make people around him lose weight, only it went horribly wrong when they couldn't eat enough to stay alive. So if you drank after this guy, you lost weight, but then eventually died of starvation.
Ignore the web guys: they watch way too much science fiction. It will work.
