We Swoon For Gucci Flats

Ok, ok, we promise we're about done with our momentary Gucci madness. But we just had to share one more -- ok, three more -- Gucci loves for this fall. These three different flats are just adorable. First up are the beige GG logo flats with brown leather trim and bamboo horsebit for $395. They're comfortable, too. Next are the off-white leather flats with a bamboo horsebit for $425.00 (these also come in black). And last, but not least, are the darling Flora canvas flats with bamboo horsebit for $395. The Flora flats should be going on sale soon, as they're really more of a spring or summer shoe. Neiman Marcus just got these in stock at the stores, and they're going fast according to our helpful saleswoman.

Gucci flats are made in Italy and run regular to slightly wide, unlike Chanel's shoes which seem to run really narrow in our opinion. The rounded toe is really fresh and no doubt is one reason they're so comfortable. If you can have only one for fall, we pick the middle one in either off-white or black leather.

Gucci and the Pampered Pet

If any of you were hoping that the "treat your pet like a human baby" trend was going away, you are going to be sadly disappointed this fall. Gucci has entered the posh pet market share battleground, and they're going in heavily armed. First up is the absolutely darling large dog carrier in beige original GG logo fabric. This one features a double-zip side opening, the crucial removable and washable interior cushion, and a cute attached short leash with clip. The specs are: 12 1/10"H x 16 2/5"W x 7 4/5"D, and it retails for $720.00. And if that's not enough Gucci for your darling Malti-poo, you can always spring for the matching pet baseball cap for $70.00. There's a dog bed, too. All items are availabe at Gucci.com and at Neiman Marcus.

We have the Louis Vuitton pet carrier, which works pretty well. The top loading feature is nice, but only if you're using it for a relatively calm dog (or the nicely trainable breed like the beagle in the photo). Cats tend to squirm when you top-load them. They keep popping their little heads out while you're trying to zip up the top; they do much better with a front loading model. And of course, you don't dare carry around a cat that's not properly confined, lest he escape to wreak havoc on your surroundings. Enough said.

Trina Turk and the Monterey Shades

The big sunglasses look is definitely turning into a Permatrend -- and thank goodness, is all we can say. If we didn't see those tiny John Lennon-style sunglasses until 2010, we'd be happy. L.A. designer Trina Turk has an especially nice take on the big sunglasses theme: these are the Monterey Shades in Brandy on the model, and in Smoke to the right. They also come in Iridescent and in Lilac. They retail for $168 and are available at the Trina Turk boutique in Palm Springs, California, or on her website, TrinaTurk.com. Trina's clothes have clean lines and are perfect for summer.

Chanel's New Fall Palette

That's Johnny Depp's longtime love, Vanessa Paradis, starring in the new Chanel 2005 makeup ads. It's clear that Chanel's makeup artists are determined to bring back the dramatic 80's thing...and Ms. Paradis looks fabulous in just about anything she puts on. So, they're showing gigantic hair (which everyone is showing as well), much heavier eyebrows settling in as a permatrend, and rich, luxurious colors. Chanel's signature product for fall is the Coromandels de Chanel: a beautiful powder eyeshadow and blush compact, laced with gold. The limited edition compact was inspired by the Coromandel screens owned by Coco Chanel herself. The colors are brick, gold and black. You can use the powder wet or dry. We like to wet a stiff, angled brush (Japonesque brand brushes are our current fave) and use the black as eyeliner (yes, this requires a steady hand). The brick is a good color for blush for most complexions, save for those with really pale skin with a blue undertone. But even those who look better in cool tones can use the gold and black. The gold powder works great as a highlighter for evening on the browbone or cheekbones. The compact retails for $55.00.

Chanel is also showing two great new red lipstick colors: Shanghai Red and Rose Paradise: one simply can't have too many lipsticks, we always say. To round off the look, we like to add Glossimer lipgloss (Levres Scintillantes, $22) in Sunset Gold. The entire collection is available at Gloss.com, which offers free samples and free shipping with purchases over $100.

Now, back to Vanessa Paradis, the mother of Johnny Depp's adorable two children. Does she wear Chanel off camera? Alas, it appears not. She tells Madmoiselle magazine:
Madmoiselle: Do you play with makeup to enhance your professional image?

Vanessa Paradis: Sure, I wear a lot of makeup when I'm working, but otherwise I try to get away from it.

MLLE: If makeup's not a big thing for you, then what do you consider your beauty secrets?

VP: I'm sorry, but I do nothing at all.

MLLE: Come on, really? Not even when it comes to diet or exercise?

VP: Oh, I don't do anything like that! My only regime is drinking water. And getting enough sleep.
Crushing, until one reads French Women Don't Get Fat, and realizes that it's a French cultural phenomenon to deny the extreme measures taken to remain beautiful. So, in translation: "I wear makeup every time I step out of the house. I watch every morsel I put in my mouth and walk everywhere. But don't tell Johnny -- he must think it's effortless." Or something like that.

Narciso Rodriguez and the Perfect Cocktail Dress

Now here's a dress that will knock 'em dead at the next cocktail party: the Narciso Rodriguez tank dress in coral pink silk. Empire waisted dresses are in, but one really needs the correct bustline (natural or man-made) to make the look work. This little number will set you back $1,995.00 at Bergdorf Goodman.

JLo Strikes Again

Photo of Jennifer Lopez Jennifer Lopez is truly an unstoppable force of nature. She acts, she dances, she sings, she designs clothing and perfume. Now, The Washington Post reports that Ms. Lopez has decided to open her first American clothing boutique at the Marshall Field's on State Street in Chicago. The boutique will feature her JLo line of fashion. In case you missed it, the first JLo boutique opened in Moscow last year.
Electric-pink cargo pocket knit pants, a faux crocodile leather clutch purse and a wild rose camisole with a removable garter belt are among items likely to be featured at the singer-actress' store within a store. Planning with the Minneapolis-based Field's began in March.

"We kind of approached each other," explained Andy Hilfiger, president and co-founder of JLo parent company Sweetface Fashion and brother of designer Tommy Hilfiger. "Our long-term plan is to open concept shops in many stores, but Chicago is such a brilliant start."

Lopez, who began her design career in 2001, is set to open the Field's boutique on Sept. 22, when she'll also attend a fashion show highlighting her clothing. The event will benefit Children's Memorial Hospital. Hilfiger said he hopes to open boutiques in department stores in New York, Miami, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
She seems truly driven to succeed. More power to her.

Gucci Meets the iPod

Gucci enters the iPod fray with this new iPod case with strap. Done in the beige double G logo with silver hardware, it retails at Gucci.com for $195. You know that Apple has to be thrilled at all the designers who've decided to make products to fit their product. Clearly, Apple is still dominating the MP3 market.

McFarlane Designs Collectible Napoleon Dynamite Toys

MTV News reports that McFarlane Toys has created collectible figures for some of the characters from the popular Napoleon Dynamite movie that will be available this November. The figures include Kip, Pedro and three Napoleon Dynamites: one dancing, one wearing his prom outfit and one playing tetherball. McFarlane Toys was founded by comic-book artist Todd McFarlane and makes characters based on film stars, comic book heroes, bands and sports stars. Todd McFarlane told MTV News that the idea for the Napoleon Dynamite figures came about in April when he noticed people where quoting lines from the movie.
"We try to make figures based on films that have an effect on people. And 'Napoleon' definitely had an effect on a whole lot of people," he said. Everywhere I went, people were spouting off lines from the film and talking about their favorite scenes. So I knew we were on to something. And that's when we began talking to [director] Jared Hess about making the figures."

The figures are just the latest in an ever-growing list of accolades and ephemera "Napoleon Dynamite" has collected since it debuted at last year's Sundance Film Festival (where it was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize). In April the Idaho State Legislature passed a bill commending Hess, who shot the film in Idaho, for "showcasing the positive aspects of Idaho's youth, rural culture, education system, athletics, economic prosperity and diversity."
Napoleon Dynamite was also named the Best Movie at this year's MTV Movie Awards so the toys will probably be a hit too. The toys will be available this November for $12.99 each except for the deluxe talking Napoleon figure which will cost $39.99. McFarlane also told MTV that if the toys sell well they may do a second line that include Tina the llama and other characters.

Jennifer Lopez Goes Live in November

Jennifer Lopez has had such success with her perfume line, that she's getting ready to launch her fourth fragrance, called Live Jennifer Lopez. The perfume is described as an "upbeat, fruity, floral" scent and it debuts in October, 2005 with a new ad campaign. Live's top notes include orange and pineapple; the heart of the scent is red currant, peony and violet. The base notes are caramel, vanilla and sandalwood. J. Lo claims this perfume will "reveal the core of her inner being." It's an interesting concept; instead of looking at those tabloid photos, you can just smell the perfume of the celebrity and know her innermost thoughts and desires.

The campaign launches in November and is being spearheaded by Select Communication's Creative Director Oliver Van Doorne. Van Doorne collaborated with photographer Jean-Baptiste Mondino for both the print and TV campaigns. "For me this campaign has captured the essence of Jennifer. Her energy, her passion for life, her graceful beauty, and one of her unique talents ... dance," said Van Doorne. The TV ad campaign will be a first for JLo. The photos look great so far...who is the mysterious man behind her on the left? One only hopes it's Richard Gere and that they're about to launch into a tango.

The Gucci Dome Bag

It's way too hot to spend too much time perusing fall and winter fashions, but this lovely Gucci dome bag in rustic brown leather did catch our eye. A handy size (11¼"H X 16"L X 4¾"W), it retails for $1,190.00 at Saks Fifth Avenue. Gucci also has online shopping now. And although the navigation of the website gets a "B-", their products get an "A." We're seeing lots of chocolate brown this fall, lots of rich fabrics and materials. And Gucci has even brought back their 70's-retro bamboo handles on some of their handbags, which definitely work with all the wood/natural fibers vibes we're seeing out and about.

Personalized Stamps Get Competitive

People interested in creating their own personalized U.S. postage stamps now have two services to choose from. Pitney Bowes Inc. has launched a customized postage service through a new alliance with Zazzle, a customized products marketplace. The new service allows customers to create full-color customized stamps using images they upload at the Zazzle website, or from a collection of images already available on the site, which includes Disney characters. The service will put Pitney Bowes and Zazzle in competition with Stamps.com, which offers a similar service called PhotoStamps. Both the Zazzle and PhotoStamps services are approved by the United States Postal Service and can be used to create official U.S. stamps. The PhotoStamps service was halted temporarily by USPS after people abused the service and created obscene stamps -- but the service was relaunched in May, 2005.

Jimmy Choo and the Metallic Flats

Jimmy Choo strikes again with the most adorable gold metallic leather flats. They have a darling bow as trim, and are available for pre-order for $440.00 from Saks Fifth Avenue. Metallic is still going strong for fall, 2005, and these dainty flats add just the right amount of bling without being over the top. Fabulous pants or a luxurious long skirt would work equally well with them. And the gold works for hot or cold weather.

Madonna Takes to Country Life

No, you aren't dreaming. That's Madonna feeding her chickens at her English country estate she shares with her husband, Guy Ritchie, and their two children, Lourdes, 7, and Rocco, 4. The photo is part of a fabulous spread for the August Vogue. Here, Madonna steps out in a Grace Kelly-inspired chiffon dress and cashmere cardigan designed by Alexander McQueen. Madonna is right at the vanguard of the English Country Look -- it's a classic and it's bigger than ever for fall. Cardigans are key to the look, especially cashmere. Madonna tells Vogue that she now considers England home, and that some of her prior work is hard for her to watch.
"The last thing I thought I would do is marry some laddish, shooting, pubgoing nature lover — and the last thing he thought he was going to do was marry some cheeky girl from the Midwest who doesn't take no for an answer!" In the interview, which arrives Thursday, Madonna says she has mellowed. She says she wears sensible shoes around her country estate and caters to a beloved flock of chickens, and her children, Lola, 8, and Rocco, 4, don't watch TV.

She even shows off her whopping wedding album (until now seen only by her "closest friends") from her 2000 marriage to director Guy Ritchie. So, for the record: She was married in a traditional, cinched-waisted gown with a long train and veil. She acknowledges that she didn't fall in love with England initially, but since meeting Ritchie, 36, Madonna, 46, has learned to ride horses, shoot and fish. Her preferred mode of transportation: bicycle. And she "could be a connoisseur of ales if I wanted to."

New Technology Keeps Suits Cool

Jos A. Bank has a new suit that helps men stay fashionable and cool at the same time during the hot summer months. The Stays Cool 2-Button Suit is designed with a special fabric from Outlast called Smart Fabric Technology that balances temperature and releases excess heat. The fabric contains micro encapsulated phase-change materials called thermocules, which absorb, store and release heat as needed. In addition to the Jos. A. Bank suits, Outlast has also applied the technology to outerwear, footwear, shoes and bedding. Sounds like the perfect technology to help you keep your cool when office politics heat up.

To DEET or Not to DEET

It's starting to seem like some kind of sci fi adventure. Before we can go out of the house, experts tell us to slather on the Mexoryl-enhanced sunscreen to avoid skin cancer and wrinkles. Then, in order to avoid dying from West Nile Virus or meningitis we should liberally coat ourselves with a DEET-containing bug spray. Or should we? Kathleen Doheny of The L.A. Times gives us our options for bug spray in her latest Healthy Traveler article.
Besides repellents with a DEET base, the CDC has approved those with the chemical picaridin as its main ingredient and those with oil of lemon eucalyptus, which is considered a more natural alternative.

The new guidelines are just in time for mosquito season. As of the Travel section's deadline Tuesday, 11 states including California had reported 13 human cases of the potentially fatal West Nile virus, spread by infected mosquitoes, including one fatality. Mosquitoes also transmit malaria and dengue fever.

In a recent study that was included in the CDC review of repellents, researchers found that a repellent with 15% DEET gave about 7.2 hours of protection against three mosquito species, all found in the U.S. Oil of lemon eucalyptus at a 26% concentration gave 7.6 hours of protection; a repellent with 10% picaridin gave 7.2 hours, said Emily Zielinski-Gutierrez, a CDC behavioral scientist involved in the review. (Picaridin repellents sold in the U.S. have a 7% concentration; higher concentrations are available in other countries.)

How do picaridin- and oil of eucalyptus repellents stack up against those with DEET? To find out, I enlisted four hikers in a purely unscientific study conducted on recent Sierra Club hikes in Griffith Park. They compared DEET with 25% concentration (Off! Deep Woods) with picaridin of 7% concentration (Cutter Advanced) and oil of lemon eucalyptus at 30% concentration (Repel). No one reported any bites.
Off has an unscented spray that's pretty good, but hands down the best-smelling mosquito repellent we ever found was a natural cedar oil spray called CedarCide. We like natural, especially in light of all those horrible articles appearing about how everything from the teflon in our non-stick pans to all the pesticides on the bottom of our shoes is really bad for us. Ok, now that we're greased up and smell like our grandmother's cedar closet, we're ready to go!

Microsoft Launches Comparison Shopping Beta

Microsoft has launched a beta test of a shopping comparison site. The beta site can be found here. Chris Jolley, Group Programming Manager of MSN Shopping, told Comparison Engines that they will be using Pricegrabber on the website and also using feeds directly from different merchants:
"Right now we are using Pricegrabber, but we have also increased the number of merchants we're working with directly. The long term the strategy is to explore and investigate ways to bring in relevant offers to consumers. We are launching with Pricegrabber because of the number of merchants they have and the ratings they have. Our relationship gives us a jumpstart in terms of ratings and reviews so we aren't starting from scratch. We are also taking feeds directly from our own merchants."

Nuvo the Robotic Home Companion

Nuvo Robot by ZMP Inc.New York Times reporter Mark Allen writes that he fell for a little yellow robot called Nuvo during its short visit that was provided by ZMP Inc., the robot's manufacturer. Nuvo helped Mark take photographs, watch the house, play music, tell time and watch television.
If I said, "Nuvo, shake hands," it reached a hand up to greet me. By calling up its control panel on my cellphone, I was able to send Nuvo shuffling around my apartment to snap photographs, which it relayed to me. In Japan users often use Nuvo to check on their children, sometimes from remote locations.

I don't have children, so I sent it to view a pile of laundry in my bedroom. It used a light in one of its eyes to illuminate the room. I later placed Nuvo on my windowsill, and on command it took a picture of me while I was out on the street.

I realized that part of my motivation for operating Nuvo from outside was to make sure it was all right; the photographs assured me that it hadn't turned off or toppled over. I realized I was falling for the little guy.

I came to understand that for all their purported helpfulness, home robots are largely about companionship.

When I watched TV with Nuvo, it occasionally responded as if it was hearing voice commands. A laugh track or an explosion caused it to wave its arms, "Yaaa!" It reacted to loud noises the same way a startled pet might. During one poignant scene on "America's Most Wanted," in which a victim was weeping, Nuvo's eye light turned blue and it shook its head. This is its way of saying it doesn't understand what is being said, but I couldn't help but feel that it was expressing sympathy.
In Japan the use of robots like Nuvo is becoming more common for checking on kids and acting as mobile security cameras. As robots become more functional over the next several years they may also become companions and could be helpful for taking care of the elderly. Nuvo's website says the robot will be available starting in October, 2005 for $7,000 each.

Yoga Mats For Everyone

Now that we've been doing yoga awhile, we feel like moving on to the next level...of yoga accessories, that is. We stumbled across Hugger Mugger, which has some very cool yoga mats and accessories. They've got mats that absorb sweat for those disturbed souls who do yoga in a 90 degree room, mats that are thin and light for travel, mats that are really long, mats that are nice and cushy and mats that look like rugs and are actually biodegradable (!). But our fave is The Tapas Ultra Yoga Mat. The Tapas (and no, we don't know why they named a yoga mat after Spanish appetizers) is twice as thick (1/4 in.) as the Original Tapas Yoga Mat. It comes in Dark Teal, Burgundy, Eggplant and Slate. A Burgundy yoga mat? Loving it! It's even washable. It makes us calm and happy, as do the bolsters and assorted yoga pillows in fun colors and prints. Ommmmmmmm.....

Before parents complain about the Goth Look, they might want to consider the most beneficial aspect of the look: no skin cancer. Goths avoid the sun, kind of like vampires do. Which means that they'll have less photoaging later in life. Go Goth, Stay Wrinkle-Free.

Elie Saab and the Fabulous Ballgowns

The 2005 Fall-Winter fashion shows in Paris last week had some real showstoppers. The ballgowns from Elie Saab were absolutely gorgeous. He favored jewel tones, extravagant silk fabrics and full, richly-adorned skirts. The ballgown is definitely back, with most of the shows showing Russian influences (think Catherine the Great, not Vladimir Putin), fairy-tale images. Saab has some of the most stunning gowns, including wedding gowns. You can see more at British Vogue.

Louis Vuitton Takes to Denim

Jessica Simpson leaves her gym while carrying the new Louis Vuitton Denim Speedy. At first, we weren't sure about the LV denim line, but it's actually pretty cute in person. It has a kind of funky appeal that's starting to grow on us. The denim line is a little hard to find right now; the real thing isn't available online. But if you go to your local Louis Vuitton boutique, they'll either have it in stock, or can order it for you. In addition to the Speedy, we also like the Pleaty Denim Alligator handbag, pictured under the Speedy. It's cute, but that has to be the weirdest name for a purse yet.

Sydney, Australia Named World's Best City By Travel and Leisure Readers

Travel and Leisure magazine readers have named Sydney, Australia the "World's Best City" in the 10th annual Travel + Leisure World's Best Awards readers' survey.
Readers rated cities on a variety of criteria including sights, culture/arts, restaurants/food, people, shopping, and value, awarding Sydney best city for the eighth time. Sydney's Minister for Tourism, Ms Sandra Nori, said the honor was indicative of the warmth with which Sydneysiders welcome visitors from the US. "This award is another tremendous compliment for the people of Sydney -- we are consistently at the top of the desirable city list around the world," Mr. Nori said. "US visitors spent 4.1 million nights in Sydney and the state of NSW in 2004 and they immediately recognize that we share far more in common than just language and have enough different to provide a unique travel experience."

"There is so much for visitors to do in Sydney -- I guarantee that anyone who climbs Sydney's Harbour Bridge for example will take with them lifelong memories of our city's vast, open sky, stunning beaches and natural harbor."
The survey also named the world's best hotel (the Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan), the World's Best Large-Ship Cruise Line (Crystal Cruises) and the World's Best Destination Spa (Miraval, Life in Balance).

Well, what are you waiting for? Fire up the computer and book that trip. Although Bali might not be the safest destination right now; perhaps the Spa might be a more relaxing choice.

The Summer Silk Halter Top

Silk Halter Top by Julie Brown Halter tops are back, in a big way. We like this Silk Halter Top by Julie Brown, in a hankerchief style. The back neck ties with cute little silver heart charms and it has a silk lining. It retails for $176.00 at Saks Fifth Avenue.

Ms. Brown started in the merchandising departments at Bergdorf Goodman and Ralph Lauren where she learned her trade. She began her own line with handbags, and branched out into clothing. She says, "Handbags are the safest way to begin a story. I picture someone going far away for the weekend wearing the bag, a halter, and a sarong. I'm always thinking of the story."

Now her line includes gorgeous dresses, skirts and tops. Her silk shirts and unique handbags have earned her a devoted following. Fans include Saarh Jessica Parker and Uma Thurman and Gwyneth Paltrow.

M is For Madonna

One of the highlights of the Live8 from London concert last weekend was Madonna's performance. In a white suit, with wavy blond curls, she looked --and sounded -- fabulous. We liked her large, platinum and diamond initial "M" pendant necklace, too (she also has an "E" she wears for "Esther"). We hear hers is $13,000 from Neil Lane, but we found these at JewelBasket.com. All the diamond initial pendants are on sale right now, for around $300 (the price varies by letter because of the different diamond weights). These are about 1/2" long. If you want something a little smaller, Nordstrom's also carries diamond initial pendants.

Lenny Kravitz Starts Design Firm

Lenny Kravitz is launching his own Miami-based design firm called Kravtiz Design, according to the Associated Press.
"We were quiet at first, just doing some private homes, and then moved into doing a penthouse recording studio," the 41-year-old singer said of his two partners. "(Now) we're doing hotels. We've got three or four things on the table now."

Kravitz's love of architecture and interior design is an old love. "I was always changing things and moving things around," said Kravitz. "When I started touring 16 years ago, going around the world, I got into architecture." But it was his opulent decor of his own homes, including one in New Orleans, that started getting notice in magazines such as Vogue.

"I've now been asked by people to do their homes," he said. And what is Kravitz's signature style? "I love things that are rooted in classic styles," he told the AP in a recent interview. "You'll see quite a blend of furniture. You might see an art nouveau chair next to a chair from the '60s."
Look for a line of decorative items in the future from the rocker turned designer. Pictured is Lenny's living room in his Miami getaway.

We Could Have Danced All Night

photo of pale blue silk chiffon halter dress from Neiman Marcus After watching the Season Finale of Dancing With the Stars last night, we must admit that we feel like dancing. And to trip the light fantastic, a girl needs a fabulous cocktail dress that will flow artistically as she whirls around the dance floor doing a fabulous foxtrot. We think this baby blue silk chiffon halter dress by Dina Bar-el fits the bill perfectly. It has a deep V neck (don't forget that two-sided tape), a shirred bodice, with an ethereal pleated skirt. It's available from Neiman Marcus for $490.

And we totally agree with Pleasant Morning Buzz: John O'Hurley and Charlotte Jorgenson were robbed of their rightful dance title. It's a travesty. But perhaps our new dancing dress will help to dry our tears over the injustice of reality TV.

Gwyneth, Apple and the Really Loud Concert

If you watched any of Live 8 from London this past weekend, you might have spotted Gwyneth Paltrow and daughter Apple in the audience watching dad Chris Martin of Coldplay perform. Obviously, Gwyneth has heard all the horror stories about how a rock concert is as loud as a 747 taking off. And she doesn't want precious little Apple to have hearing damage, so she outfitted little Apple with this nifty hot pink Peltor Kid Headset. Peltor Kid hearing protectors allow ambient noise in, but filter out harmful loud noises. They're lightweight and comfortable. Peltor makes headsets for pilots, so they know their headsets. They come in neon pink and neon green and are available from the British site, HeadsetServices.com, and at Adams Direct for approximately $30 U.S.

Louis Vuitton, Jessica Simpson and Iraq

Ok, we know Jessica Simpson took her Louis Vuitton Multicolor Speedy 30 camping a couple of years ago. So what did she choose to carry her stuff when she visited Iraq to cheer up the troops? Why, it was a Louis Vuitton Monogram Canvas Cabas Mezzo, of course. And that one's really hers, not a prop handed to her by a stylist just before she walks in front of a camera. It's worn and she's seen with it everywhere, including at her recent interview for her GQ cover feature, where the nosy interviewer (who speculates that the ditzy blond act is just that: an act) took a peek inside her purse, only to find -- gasp -- actual literature. Will wonders never cease?

Powder On the Go

Makeup artists are always going on and on about how crucial the right powder is. But loose powder (the only kind to use, according to our vigilant dermatologist) is a horrible mess. No matter what you do, loose powder always escapes to mar your lovely bathroom counter. But we had a powder nirvana moment recently. The company that owns Chanel also owns a french cosmetics company called Bourjois. It's made in the same labs as Chanel, but it's a lot cheaper. And they have some nifty packaging ideas. This loose powder contraption is simply amazing. You open the lid, push up the brush, and through the miracle of French engineering, the loose powder deposits itself on the brush. Now you have the right amount of loose powder on the brush, ready to be swept on your waiting, flawless complexion. It's only $20 at Ulta.com or Sephora.com. It comes in a number of colors, including a fabulous gold highlighter, a silver highlighter, and all the other normal colors. We love this powder and won't travel without it.

So, could it be any hotter for 4th of July? No need to answer, it's purely rhetorical...just something to say while our makeup heads south during this weekend's outdoor festivities. The set retails for $45. And if you decide to see War of the Worlds this weekend, you're going to need extra lip gloss after all that nail-biting. Trust us.
