Michael Kors and the Giant Straw Tote
We are eyeing Michael Kors' new "Santorini" Straw Tote: it's huge, straw is hot for Spring, and it comes with white, bronze, luggage, or black leather trim. The dimensions are a hefty 19-1/2" W x 11" H x 8" D, with a respectable 9-1/2" drop. That should be big enough to tote around a wallet, makeup bag, sunglasses, water bottle, steamy summer beach reading and even some tasty complex-carby snacks (oh, please, low carb is totally over.)
Considering the fact that the tote is big enough for the model to fit her head and shoulders into, it should be big enough for our needs.
It retails for $348.00 at Bloomingdales.com.

Bring on the Pink Rhinestone Skulls
Skulls, skulls, skulls -- that's what you see when you look closely at the pattern on scarves and jewelry of all the most photogenic starlets today. The skull madness seems to be igniting into some kind of macabre trend, so we decided to check out some skulls that are not quite so....Halloweenish.
From left to right, we have 1) The Tarina Tarantino "Crystal Skull" Necklace in Fuchsia on a sterling silver chain (beloved of Kelly Clarkson) ($120); 2) Disney Couture pink Lucite bangle with iridescent pink crystals, gold plated Tinkerbell charm and white resin skull and bead charm. ($138.00); and 3) Disney Couture large "Skull" Ring with pink rhinestones ($45). All are available at Adasa.com.
No, your eyes are not deceiving you: that does say "Disney Couture" -- which certainly seems like an oxymoron. Can this really be from Disney? But then you look closer and see the very trademarked image of Tinkerbell right next to a skull that looks more "Pirates of the Caribbean" (the ride, not the movie) than Keith Richards after a hard night of partying. So: grinning skulls with pink rhinestones....it's a look.

New Princess Cruise to Set Sail From New York
In June, 2006, Princess Cruise Lines is launching its new Crown Princess which will inaugurate its new cruise service from New York to the Caribbean. The nine-day roundtrip cruise will visit the Eastern and Western Caribbean, as well as Bermuda and the port of Grand Turk. The company is promising extra luxury on the new cruise ship:
Crown Princess will feature a number of new service and design innovations to the Princess fleet, including a dramatic new piazza-style atrium, new casual dining venues and expansion of some favorite shipboard areas. Within the new street cafe environment of the atrium, passengers will find an International Cafe serving up fresh pastries and baked goods in the morning and other assorted offerings throughout the day, as well as the introduction of Vines, a new wine and seafood bar. Several signature Princess venues have been further enhanced, including an expanded Sabatini's Italian tratorria with a new piano lounge area and new location high on Deck 16 to offer panoramic views. The Crown Grill will also make its debut on this ship, which is a new steak and seafood restaurant that expands on the line's signature Sterling Steakhouse concept with an open, theater-style kitchen where chefs will custom-prepare steamed shellfish and cooked-to-order steaks and chops.
The ship will also feature the many hallmark features that define the Princess experience, including the dramatic Movies Under the Stars poolside movie screen, multiple dining and entertainment options, Personal Choice Dining featuring traditional or Anytime seating, a two-story Lotus Spa with fitness center, an extensive children and teen's center, a wedding chapel and nearly 900 staterooms with private balconies.
Well, that all sounds delightful. And for New Yorkers, it means you don't have to fly to Miami first anymore to catch that Caribbean cruise. Still...Bermuda? Is that a good idea? We know it's beautiful and you don't really hear so much about the Bermuda Triangle any more. Maybe that doesn't exist anymore. And we do love a good Caribbean cruise, especially after shopping for fabulous cruise clothes in New York.

Hilary Swank is the Muse for Guerlain's New Fragrance
Guerlain has reached a ceal with Oscar-winning actress Hilary Swank: Swank will be the new muse for Guerlain's next frangrance, which will be launched in September, 2006. Renato Semerari, the President and CEO of Maison Guerlain said in a statement:
"Today, Guerlain expands its international presence by associating its name with a muse. More than just a face, Guerlain searched for a personality and character embodying the Guerlain spirit. Both a muse and a spokesperson, Hilary Swank will inspire and represent Guerlain for the next three years."
"Hilary Swank, two-time Academy Award winning actress, is an extraordinary woman full of beauty and passion. In her award-winning roles, both daring and unconventional, she captivated the world. Hilary is bold and confident, yet full of emotion and truly genuine. It is this remarkable spirit that appealed to the directors of Guerlain.
Her charisma will shine through as she presents at the 78th Academy Awards ceremony on March 5th."
Hilary will next be seen in the supporting actress role in Black Dahlia, which stars the ubiquitous Scarlett Johansson and Josh Hartnett, and in a starring role in The Reaping for Warner Brothers.
We like Hilary Swank: she was fabulous in Million Dollar Baby. But she really needs to do a nice glamorous role next, we think. A role where she isn't beaten to a pulp and then dies: it's getting kind of disturbing to see that happen to her on film twice now. Although an Oscar did follow both of those on-screen deaths, so perhaps she knows best.

Shopping With Johnny Weir
The Washington Post has what has to be the most entertaining Olympic athlete profile yet: reporter Libby Copeland braved the cold and went shopping in Torino with flamboyant U.S. Men's figure skater Johnny Weir. Weir is incredibly talented, but he had a terrible Olympics: he placed 5th in the men's figure skating competition. The night of the long program, he missed the bus from the dormitory to the ice rink because he never inquired as to what the schedule was. Besides, he wanted a private driver and car. But none was available, he nearly had to walk to the rink and he was too rattled to skate his best. Later, he cheered himself up by shopping like a madman.
So far, Weir, 21, who came in fifth in the men's figure skating competition for the U.S. team last week (but first in matters of beauty and brashness), has bought the following items here: five pairs of shoes, a pair of rabbit fur hand warmers, a Dolce & Gabbana hoodie he says reads "Sex trainer: Best to practice seven days a week," and a sable scarf that was supposed to be $715 but was instead $415 because he spoke French with the saleslady.
Ah, the fabulousness that is Johnny Weir! The fur collars! The special deals! His absolute favorite item of clothing is a Roberto Cavalli beaver-and-python coat. He is also proud that the "Louie" in Boston "pre-sold me a bag before it was allowed to be released," he says. "I'm the first person in the entire world to have this bag."
*****
He finishes his biscuit and we take the tram to the high-end shopping district around Via Roma. He heads into a eyewear store and tries on a pair of Dior sunglasses encrusted with rhinestones that, at nearly $1,200, he decides are too expensive. Besides, he already has this pair without the rhinestones, he says. Besides, he already has 45 pairs of Dior sunglasses.
He wanders around inside. "They have the Dior ski goggles," he says with awe.
Sitting down to arrange the laces on his new sneakers (whose laces he refuses to tie but instead carefully wraps and tucks in elaborate fashion), Johnny spots a pair of $320 Roberto Cavalli shades. He gives them to the saleslady to ring up. This, he says, will bring his sunglasses collection to 103 pairs, which he keeps arranged in drawers according to designer.
"I take care of them all," he says. "I have to polish them."
Weir considers clothes and handbags and sunglasses his children. In his closet, "certain designers get a black hanger and certain designers get a white hanger, and they're hung in order of designer and then color." He believes in buying real designer stuff; when he sees someone with a knockoff handbag, "it hurts my feelings," he says.
Maybe if Johnny had spent a bit less time organizing his designer clothing by hangar color and a little more time learning the bus schedules to the Olympic ice rink, he'd have a gold medal to place next to all those Dior sunglasses. Well, there's always Vancouver in 2010. And let's not forget that he does have excellent taste in handbags.

Stuart Weitzman Considers Cork
In all our years of shoe shopping, we've never before come across a stylish pump made out of cork. Yes, you heard us, cork. But Stuart Weitzman for some rason felt compelled to make a fabulously styled stiletto pump in four unusual colors or fabrics -- and one of them is cork. We also like the black crepe version, as well as the denim and brass-colored kidskin.
They each have a wild 4" metal heel, which should come in handy if you're attacked and you need to throw some Aeon Flux-style wicked martial arts moves. The style is called "Fever" and it retails for $225 at StuartWeitzman.com. Now, if we can only figure out what kind of outfit goes with cork stilettos....

Juicy Couture Giant Sunglasses
Now that our last pair of giant sunglasses is starting to look a bit banged up, it's time to hunt for some new ones for Spring. We like these new Juicy Couture Gela Rhinestone Logo Sunglasses, which come in either white, shiny black or pink opaline.
We have no idea why they're called "Gela" -- is it a girl's name? A misspelled lizard of the Southwest? Whatever the reason behind the name, we like them because they are silly and fun and make us think of the beach. They retail for $220.00 at NeimanMarcus.com.

The New Nail Fix
Neutrogena has a nifty new nail product that we're just crazy about: the Neutrogena Instant Nail Enhancer. When we're giving our nails a break from the manicure routine, this is just the thing to make your nails look great. It comes in tube with a brush: you just brush the solution on bare nails every day instead of nail polish. They look like they've been buffed, with a nice sheen. There is no odor, it dries instantly and it strengthens nails with Vitamin E and Provitamin B5. So your nails get stronger and they look like you've had them buffed or have a coat of polish will a subtle shine. When you just can't get to the manicurist, just slap this stuff on and your nails look a lot more polished -- and you look like you're totally organized, even if you're not. It comes in either Pearl Sheen (our favorite) or Buffed Sheen.

Ashley and Mary-Kate to be New Faces of Badgley Mischka
Ashley Olsen and Mary-Kate Olsen appear to be leaving dumpster chic behind: they are set to appear in Badgley Mischka's upcoming advertising campaign. This is the twins' first partnership with a luxuxry fashion house, and so far the photos are stunning. The offical press release says:
Ashley commented, "We have been fans of Mark and James for years and were honored when approached to appear in the campaign. When I wear Badgley Mischka I feel sexy and feminine," Mary-Kate added, "Recently, we attended their fall fashion show. The clothes were glamorous, beautiful, colorful and fun."
Mark Badgley and James Mischka, stated, "Ashley and Mary-Kate have grown up to become America's young style icons. They have an amazing sense of fashion and individuality that intrigued us. Ashley and Mary-Kate reflect the younger, edgier and more sensual glamour that we have incorporated into our latest fall collection."
Commenting on the creative, Dari Marder, Creative Director, stated, "Partnering with Ashley and Mary-Kate allowed us to showcase the young and modern glamour that is Badgley Mischka. The central theme of the campaign was 'modern day Cinderella's.'[sic] Creatively, we were all about having the girls look gorgeous and elegant but not perfectly coiffed. It is a looser more unrefined and approachable glamour."
The campaign was photographed by legendary photographer, Gilles Bensimon in New York City in the Presidential Suite of the St. Regis Hotel and was created by Iconix's in-house marketing team. The campaign features both Olsen's wearing gowns from the couture collection. In addition to the print ads, the campaign will also appear on the internet and in-store.
Modern Day Cinderellas? Well, we suppose they were poor once upon a time...in the few months after they were born before they landed that first acting gig. Well they look fabulous and so do the gowns -- especially that blue stunner.

Men to Spend More on Valentine's Day This Year
Men will spend more on Valentine's Day this year on average according to the National Retail Federation (NRF) 2006 Valentine's Day Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey. The study found that the average consumer will spend $100.89 on Valentine's Day, up slightly from $97.27 last year. That's on average so it doesn't mean every man will spend more this year. As usual men will outspend women. The average male is spending $135.67 -- about double the $68.64 that the average female will spend. And fewer men are buying flowers this year (52.3 % vs. 57.8% in 2005) but more will be purchasing jewelry (22.4% vs. 18.1% in 2005).
The most popular gifts are cards with 62% of consumers planning to purchase at least one Valetine's Day Card. The next most popular gifts are
candy (47.1%), dining out (42.1%), flowers (32.9%), jewelry (14.6%) and gift cards/gift certificates (10.9%).
Hallmark tracked down the most popular Valentine's Day card (pictured above on the right) this year and they found that one particular card was selling the best in almost every city.
The card's face is a deep red foil, with "For the One I Love" across the top in black script, a large picture of a red rose in the center, and a thick black ribbon cutting through the middle. Inside, it simply states: "Each time I see you, hold you, think of you, here's what I do ... I fall deeply, madly, happily in love with you. Happy Valentine's Day."
The card's designer, Marcia Meulengracht, said she was not at all surprised the card sold five times better than the average Valentine -- so well it's being offered for a second year.
"I cut to the chase -- what I would want to give and what I would want to receive," Meulengracht said. "A guy wants to say he still loves her. A gal wants to know he still does. She wants to get goose bumps. He wants to think he'll get lucky."
For those still scrambling to come up with a last minute gift idea there are lots of articles on the Internet offering last minute gift advice. Some helpful articles can be found here, here, here, here, here and here. About.com's Marriage Guide also has a list of last minute gift ideas ending with flowers: "When in doubt, send flowers or a blooming plant like an orchid."

NextWorth Helps People Sell Used iPods
A market for old iPods has emerged on eBay as iPod owners look to upgrade to newer models. InternetNews.com reports that a company called NextWorth is looking to capatalize on the emerging market by helping people sell their old iPods on eBay.
Assuming the iPod is in good working condition, the company, which runs an online consignment service, will offer a guaranteed price for any machine and take the task of reselling it online.
"We're trying to create an alternative to buyer's remorse," said David Chen, CEO. "If you want that new iPod, then go for it."
NextWorth calls the service the Great iPod Exchange. Ebay currently lists tens of thousands of iPod-related auctions. Internetnews.com says one setback to selling old iPods are concerns about the battery.
In terms of reselling iPods, one stumbling block may be ongoing complaints by some users about problems with batteries and hard drives in the machines.
"Price conscious customers are some of the ones who investigate the most," Mulpuroo said. "If you think there's a good chance you'll be getting a lemon, I'm not sure you'd want to buy the product."
The market for old gadgets should continue to grow. Each time a new upgraded model is released there will be people interested in acquiring the older models that some people no longer want. Gadgets like iPods are still relatively new and new upgraded versions will continue to be released. Newer models of ipods as well as other gadgets, game systems and video players should keep eBay and other online auctions busy for years to come.

The Caudalie Cabernet Scrub
We've been eying a vacation at the Caudalie Spa in Bordeaux, France, where they drink bordeaux wine and immerse the spa guests in red wine-derived concotions. The spa's anti-aging vinotherapy concept evolved from the so-called French Paradox study, which concluded that the French have very low heart disease rates even though they eat real butter and cream, largely because they consume huge amounts of red wine.
The grape seeds from the grapes
contains polyphenols, which some claim to be up to 10,000 times more effective than vitamin E in stopping the free radicals responsible for 80% of premature wrinkling. And that's the basis of the spa treatments.
If you can't make it to the Caudalie Spa this week, here's the next best thing: the Crushed Cabernet Scrub, which is being sold exclusively by Sephora.com. You use it in the shower; the scrub part buffs away dryness, while the crushed grapeseeds, brown sugar and essential oils are infused into your skin. It couldn't hurt to drink a good glass of Cabernet afterwards, either.

U.S. Olympic Team Hats
After the last Olympics, we picked up a couple of those cool U.S. Olympic team berets: we have nearly worn them out. They're comfortable and look good, too. They also really kept our heads warm. So, of course, the first thing we thought of while watching the Opening Ceremonies this evening was where do we buy another cool hat? OK, that wasn't actually our first thought. Our first thoughts were total amazement at the guys rollerblading by with two foot flames coming out of their heads. And the fact that the U.S. Olympic team marched to The Village People's "YMCA" and Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive."
But back to the accessories. The official maker for the U.S. Olympic Team is the (unfortunately named) company called Roots. That's why everyone's hat says "Roots," to those who have written in to ask. The berets retail for USD $24.95. They come in red, white and navy blue. The store also sells t-shirts, pins, jackets, the works. Some of the items may take awhile to ship -- but it's worth it, in our opinion.
Another place to find Olympic merchandise is The Official Olympic Store. At the official store, we like the Polar Fleece Olympic Slippers -- they're just the thing to warm up your tootsies on a cold Torino morning. Even if you can't ski like Alberto Tomba, there's no reason you can't have his slippers.

The Lilly Pulitzer Derby Hat
As Spring approaches, it's time to start eyeing some giant, floppy hats. The real reason to wear them is to protect one's delicate skin from the aging properties of sunlight but as an added bonus they are quite fashionable right now.
We like this Derby Hat in straw with a festive printed sash. It comes in Large/Extra Large or Small/Medium and retails for $68 at LillyPulitzer.com
Add some giant, oversized Juicy Couture sunglasses and you're set to go.

The Snugglebug Baby Pacifier Clip
Mother of two Maquel McQuarrie was sick and tired of lost, dropped and dirty pacifiers. She tried out the current pacifier clips oin the market, but none of them were strong enough. Her solution? She founded her own company, Snugglebug Baby. Snugglebug Baby offers "fashionable and functional pacifier clips."
The clips are really gorgeous, but what we really liked about them is the fact that they can hold up to 40 lbs. -- that's a lot of pulling and pushing from a toddler. The clips work with all major brands of pacifiers
(Nuk, Mam, Avent, even Soothies). The beads are are strung on
top-of-the-line jewelry wire with a test-strength of 40 pounds. Each end
is triple-secured to resist breakage. Pictured is the Bow Pacifier Clip, which would make an adorable shower gift: it retails for $25 at Snugglebugbaby.biz.

Show Your Guy You Care With a Levitating Hover Scooter
What do you buy for Valentine's Day for the the man who has everything? Why, a Hammacher Schlemmer Levitating Hover Scooter, of course! He'll be the first guy on the block to scare the heck out of the early morning joggers with this unique invention which hovers a few inches off the ground and zips along at speeds up to 15 miles per hour. Here's what Hammacher Schlemmer has to say:
Learning to ride the scooter takes less than five minutes, and no previous skateboarding, surfing, snowboarding, or other experience is required. Easy and intuitive to control, the rider simply leans left or right to perform smooth turns without the need for complex controls. A throttle and clutch mounted on the handlebar allow prec ise control of engine power while skimming along. To increase acceleration, the rider leans back slightly while gripping the handlebar, and the friction drive wheel at the underside rear of the scooter makes contact with the ground, increasing speed up to a maximum of approximately 15 mph.
The hovering scooter deftly glides over level, solid ground such as concrete, asphalt, or well-groomed grass, free of debris, sand, stones, and other obstacles. It can even travel up minor inclines. Stopping is as easy as releasing the throttle and clutch controls and allowing the hovering scooter to gently coast to a halt over a distance of approximately twenty feet. For added safety, an engine kill switch wristband similar to those on water-jet vehicles is worn by the rider during operation. Utilizing the same gravity-defying principles found in larger hovercraft, the hovering scooter is powered by a four-stroke internal combustion engine that operates for approximately one hour on a full tank of unleaded gasoline.
This little gem of technology will set you back $16,999.95 and comes in either red, green, blue or yellow. Red, of course, is the preferred color for Valentine's Day. (Hat tip to Gadget Review.

Fashion Week For Fall 06
Forbes has an early roundupof how Fashion Week in New York is progressing so far. Wide belts, bold women's wear, wearable clothes and lots of dresses are early trends that are appearing for Fall 2006.
The fall collections previewed Sunday at New York Fashion Week featured a dark, rich - almost wintery - color palette, including burgundy, gray, bottle green, black and cognac instead of the brighter yellows, golds and oranges that usually usher in the season.
*****
Tracy Reese: Reese's signature style is "pretty" and for fall she did it again. However, she didn't go overly girlie, except for a few too many bows on dresses that didn't need them.
The collection was cohesive - but not cluttered - as Reese debuted her accessories collection.
Her wide patent leather belts with gold hardware were worn high on the waist over a black V-shaped vest and cream-colored shirt with oversized sleeves, and again with a black tribal beaded blouse and flowing skirt. Leather booties with thick heels that tied at the top looked clunky with some of the dresses, though.
A long gray cape with a beautiful turquoise-accented lining underneath revitalized a shape that can be tired and dowdy. It was worn with wide-leg pleated trousers and a simple turtleneck.
The sea green leather used for a fur-trimmed toggle coat and matching skirt looked soft and moved easily.
For dressing up, a blue floral sequined shift glimmered like an ocean and a berry-colored long tiered dress had a tank neckline alternately decorated by ethnic brown beads and glamorous purple crystals.
*****
Designer Christophe Lemaire was inspired by the first album from De La Soul called "3 Feet High and Rising" and he clearly was trying to bring a little hip-hop attitude to downright nerdy details, such as wire-rim glasses and too-short pants.
The show also included puffy parkas and rubber boots in bright candy colors.
Less mustard-yellow, gold and orange for fall? All we can say is "Hallelujah!"

Harry Potter and the Hungarian Horntail
We do love Lego toys (as do all the children of our acquaintance) and one really popular product right now is a tie-in with the book and film Harry Potter and the Gobelet of Fire. As part of the Triwizard Tournament, Harry must go mano a mano with a Hungarian Horntail dragon and steal a golden egg it's been given to protect during the tournament.
There are 265 Lego pieces made of plastic, including Harry, Dumbledore, Mad-Eye Moody, a magnetic golden egg, Harry's broom and a cool magnetic hand for Harry so he can seize the golden egg once he gets close enough.
We just love Harry Potter and this Lego set is great fun. The set says it's made for ages 7-12, but this is pretty complex. 10-13 year-olds will also enjoy it, and will have an easier time with the assembly. The set retails for $29.99 at Amazon.com.

Thomas Pink Outfits the Pink Panther
We've heard of all kinds of movie tie-ins: books, toys, fast food, music etc. But we'd never heard of an esteemed conservative British purveyor of men's clothing getting in on the movie tie-in bandwagon --- until now. Thomas Pink, which has been providing luxury men's clothing in London
since the 18th century, has launched a new collection of "iconic shirts and ties with a quirky Pink Panther feel" in connection with the release of the upcoming feature film The Pink Panther starring Steve Martin, Kevin Kline and Beyonce Knowles.
Says Alison Loehnis, Sales & Marketing Director for Thomas Pink, "The partnership between Thomas Pink and MGM is the perfect example of bringing together great brand equity. The extension of the Pink Panther collection in 2006 was a natural progression as our customers loved the stylish, quirky collections we launched originally to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Pink Panther."
The exclusive Pink Panther collection includes iconic shirts and ties which combine the wit and humor of the Pink Panther with Thomas Pink's shirt making heritage:
* Women can choose from three limited edition shirts including a
tailored pink and black striped shirt with double cuffs and covered
placket effect and a Pink Panther double faced sateen shirt with
double cuffs and Pink Swarovski crystal buttons in black or pale pink.
* Men can choose from two limited edition Slim Fit shirts -- a jacquard
textured shirt with a pink diamond design or a black silky cotton
shirt with contrasting pink diamond lining.
* The Pink Panther has always been loved by children so, with this in
mind, Pink have followed the success of their boys collection with a
white pinpoint shirt with pink diamond pattern detail on the cuff and
yoke lining.
* Accessories include sterling silver mini Pink Panther cufflinks,
Swarovski pink crystal cufflinks for her and a cheeky Pink Panther
pink and black tie.
It's cute: we approve. You can find the Thomas Pink collection at ThomasPink.com.

Louis Vuitton for the New Mom
There are so many posh diaper bags: it seems that every designer has jumped on Diaper Bag bandwagon. We like this Louis Vuitton
Diaper Bag, which retails for $1,240.00 at Eluxury.com.
The dimensions are: 12" L x 10" H x 4" W, which is a good size. We also like the shape and the fact that the shoulder strap is wide enough to be comfortable. It has two compartments, and includes a removable embroidered diaper mat. The fabric is polyamide textile canvas with
cowhide trim. Inside one section are three pockets with elastic straps to hold bottles (or a water bottle for you). The other side has a zipped compartment with several inside and outside pockets.
It's a good design and is durable, like all Louis Vuitton products. And when you don't need a diaper bag anymore, it makes a great travel bag.

Stella McCartney Looks to Spring06
We really like the shape and colors of Stella McCartney's new printed Christabel top and skinny pants. The kimono-inspired top references Pucci with a multicolor abstract print. but the V-neckline and Empire waist which ties in back make it all Stella's own.Made of silk chiffon, the top retails for $939.
The cotton stretch Skinny Pants feature side pockets, as well as back zip pockets. The pants retail for $495.00. Stella is showing all her skinny pants very long this season, whether they are paired with heels or flats. We really like the look. Both are available on pre-order (with a ship date in early April) at Bergdorf Goodman.
